Dear Ms. Caryl,
I am writing this letter as a follow-up to our conversation on August 2"d, 2007 regarding
the freestanding sign located at the UPS Facility at 550 Andover Park W, Tukwila.
Your permit application states in the Description of Work:
Sign "D" does not required (sic) a sign permit. However, the current
proposal does not comply with the requirements for an internal
informational sign (TMC 19.22). The City is not approving the
installation of the internal informational sign.
Sign "D" refers to the double face, non -illuminated "Customer Center" sign that
has been installed along Andover Park W. This sign could either be considered
an internal information sign or a freestanding sign. However, this sign does not
comply with our sign code under either definition.
According to TMC 19.08.120 Internal Information Sign, "...means a sign which
gives directional information or identifies specific use area and which is necessary
to maintain the orderly internal use of the premises..." An internal information
sign may not "...advertise in any manner the facility occupying the premises nor
good or services available..." (TMC 19.22.020). As a sign advertising the
service provided (Customer Center) and oriented to off-site traffic, this sign does
not meet our code for internal information signs.
TMC 19.32.140, in describing the code regarding freestanding signs, states:
One freestanding sign shall be permitted for each site. One additional free-
standing sign may be permitted for sites that meet the following
conditions:
a. The site has at least 400 linear feet of frontage on a public street;

b. The site has at least two detached commercial occupied buildings,
neither of which is accessory to the other; and
c. The site is occupied by at least two tenants.
The site where UPS is located already has one freestanding sign (RE -PC). The
site does not have two detached commercial buildings so the site does not meet
the requirements for a second freestanding sign.
Unfortunately, the City code does not support the installation of this sign. Your
cooperation in removing this sign is requested and appreciated.
Attached is a copy of your application illustrating sign "D" along with the
relevant sections of our sign code. Please contact me if you have any questions or
seek clarification.
