The "Just Futons" sign was refaced without a permit. This is not allowed under Tukwila Municipal Code (TMC). The City contacted the business and a permit was applied for. However, the City determined that the sign does not meet the current standards for signage on the site. TMC 19.32.070 - Freestanding Signs — Setback states, "Any freestanding sign shall be set back from all property lines a distance at least equal to the overall height of the sign..." According to the applicant, Sign Tech Electric, this sign is 14.5" and is 17.33' tall. Therefore, as installed, it does not meet code. Presumably, this sign was installed originally per code; however, TMC 19.30.030 requires that any alteration to a sign, including a reface, requires that the sign be brought up to current code. Therefore, to avoid a code enforcement violation for installing a sign without a permit, this sign needs to be lowered to a height equal or less than its setbacks.
