HomeMy WebLinkAboutCivilService 2011-05-09 Minutes.4 May 9, 2011 City of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard Tukwila, Washington 98188 Jim Haggerton, Mayor The following commissioners attended the regularly scheduled meeting of the Tukwila Civil Service Commission: Chairperson Carol Zuvela, and Vice Chairperson Dennis Sivak. Others in attendance were Ron Johnston, Interim Police Chief Michael Villa, Fire Chief Nick Olivas, and Human Resources Analyst Kim Gilman. CALL TO ORDER 4:57pm Chairperson Zuvela called the April meeting of the Tukwila Civil Service Commission to order. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOVED BY SIVAK, SECONDED BY ZUVELA, THAT THE MINUTES OF THE TUKWILA CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING HELD APRIL 4, 2011 BE APPROVED. MOTION CARRIED. GENERAL BUSINESS Introductions Ron Johnston introduced himself by saying that he is a former City of Tukwila Police Officer (retired) and long -time Tukwila resident. He looks forward to serving on the Commission. Examiner Update The Human Resources Analyst notified commissioners that HR staff will continue to triage and fulfill civil service responsibilities until the Civil Service Examiner position can be filled. Commission Application Ron Johnston's application to fill the vacant commission #2 position has been forwarded to the Mayor's Office. The City Council will be considering confirmation at their May 16 meeting. FIRE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update Chief Olivas stated that there are currently two staff members out on disability leave. He also explained that he will be recruiting for lateral entry firefighters soon to backfill a position that became vacant due to a captain's promotion. Battalion Chief List Battalion Chief testing took place on 4/28 and 4/29 with 7 candidates completing the process. All 7 were certified to the Battalion Chief Eligibility List. The list is set to expire in one year. At the current time, there are no Battalion Chief vacancies. POLICE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update Interim Chief Villa reported that the Department currently has 4 open positions, and that there are currently 3 candidates in the background process to fill 3 of those positions. The Department is also looking to hire 2 pipeline positions due to anticipated internal promotions. Lateral police testing is scheduled for 5/20. Villa also reported that Sergeant interviews (from the certified eligibility list) is also scheduled to occur this week.
