HomeMy WebLinkAboutPark 2018-02-14 Item 5A - Green Tukwila UpdateGreen Tukwila Update Date: Feb 7, 2018 Admin Update: • Olena Perry is continuing to work with Forest Steward to create a 2018 work plan • Olena Perry is learning Access Volunteer Database • Olena Perry planned, implemented and wrapped up MLK Day of Service Volunteer Update: MLK Day of Service completed work: • 12 yards of mulch spread • 135 young native plants now have mulch rings • 20 mature native plants have mulch rings • 6 mature evergreens with ivy rings cut • Lots of small trees, shrubs and understory plants clear of ivy • The big maple (across from registration) cleared and mulched • 3 forested islands cleared of ivy and mulched • Native snowberry grove microweeded and mulched • Plus a ton of ivy removal by the horseshoe pit and on the slope The event ended up with 44 volunteers that equals 109 volunteer hours for the event. This number is huge, and using 2017 rates for volunteer time (estimated at $24.14 an hour) that equates to $2,631.00 in value! Volunteers are so valuable to these big picture programs like Green Tukwila. Partner Update • DHP, Forterra and TPR met to discuss 2018, Sean Albert has agreed to be a Forest Steward for The Hill. The rest of meeting was logistics for work parties and support • 2018 DHP schedule is formalized • Sharon Leishman, Founder of Duwamish Alive and Sound Steward of North Winds Weir has agreed to be a Forest Steward and wants to find other ways to support GTP • Partners meeting is Feb 15 (City, Forterra, EarthCorps, Student Conservation Association) • McKinstry has officially become the Forest Steward with Crystal Springs and will be working with Forterra, possibility of a Duwamish Alive site • BECU is working on 2018 Shoreline Project • Heidi Watters is working on 2018 Stewardship plan for S. 128th Parcel Upcoming events: Green-Duwamish Watershed Symposium http://www,greenduwamishwatershed.org/ green tukwila photos
