HomeMy WebLinkAboutTLAB 2016-11-01 Minutes Tukwila Library Advisory Board November 1, 2016 Minutes Attendance: TLAB members -Gerie Ventura, Steve Miller, Linda McLeod, Marie Parrish, Scott Kruzie; KCLS staff - Angie Benedetti, Abbie Anderson, Rachel McDonald; Tukwila Library Council members – Hafsah Math, Sarah Morozov, Eleanna Morozov, Breanna Ruggles, Syross Bendico; Tukwila Parks and Recreation – Kristin May; Deputy Police Chief Bruce Linton; Tukwila Fire Chief Jay Wittwer Meeting called to order at 5:36 pm by Chair Gerie Ventura. 1. Representatives of the teen Tukwila Library Council – Hafsah Math, Sarah Morozov, Eleanna Morozov, Breanna Ruggles and Syross Bendico assisted by Rachel McDonald, teen librarian, presented a slide show of the many activities they participate in. Many of these activities involve working with or supporting members of the community to improve literacy, ie. Book Buddies where they read with younger children on a regular basis. They have raised money for the new library and Syrian refugee education. An upcoming project is participating in a research project on diversity in picture books. They represent the library to the larger community at school, in the library and at home. 2. Public Safety Bond – Chief Wittwer and Deputy Chief Linton reported that a presentation on the bond could be found on the city website. It is a 20 yr. Bond. It does not pay for maintenance or public works. 3. A brief discussion of an appropriate way to honor Sharon Kidd at the new library occurred. Scott Kruzie moved that we endorse the idea of a large tree outside the library with a plaque dedicating it to Sharon Kidd. Linda McLeod seconded the motion. The motion passed. Angie Benedetti will pass this on to KCLS. Marie Parrish has been in contact with Sharon's daughter and reported she would like to know when the library opening ceremony is held so that she might attend. 4. Steve Miller moved that we accept the minutes of September 6, 2016. Scott Kruzie seconded. Motion passed. 5. Kirstin May reported that the money TLAB had set aside to be used at the Halloween Carnival for a storyteller was not spent. We have approximately $1700 left in our yearly budget. After discussion, Linda McLeod moved that remaining funds for 2016 be used to support th Tukwila's Spirit of Giving event on December 10 by purchasing educational games and books to be given to needy families. Scott Kruzie seconded the motion and it passed. 6. Kirstin May will bring a proposed 2017 budget for our consideration to the December meeting. 7. Kirstin May reported that the terms of Scott Kruzie, Steve Miller and Gerie Ventura will expire on December 31, 2016. All consented to be reappointed and Kirstin will notify the mayor's office. 8. Abbie Anderson reported on library activities. There are women only programs, Play and Learn times on Saturday mornings for young children, and early release day programs. A volunteer from Valley View Library will be helping to provide increased Study Zone times while Valley View is undergoing remodeling. Yarn Time is an activity which all ages can participate in. Everyone is invited and donation of yarn and needles would be appreciated. 9. An opening date for the new library is uncertain. A strike has delayed installation of glass and the library is dependent on the other developer to ensure that parking is available. 10. KCLS is undergoing a Strategic Planning Process and is having community conversations. Abbie Anderson asked if TLAB would be interested in hosting a communication meeting but time is short. No decision was made. Linda McLeod made a motion to adjourn, Scott Kruzie seconded and motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 6:55 pm. Next meeting – December 6, 2016 at 5:30pm at Tukwila Community Center.
