HomeMy WebLinkAboutReg 2018-04-02 Item 2 - Proclamations - Sexual Assault Awareness Month / National Volunteer WeekOffice of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every community; and WHEREAS, one in five women and one in 71 men will experience sexual assault or sexual harassment during their lifetime; and WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience a sexual assault before the age 18; and WHEREAS, young people experience heightened rates of sexual violence and youths 12 to 17 are 2.5 times more likely to be a victim of sexual assault; and WHEREAS, on campus one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college; and WHEREAS, we must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention, supporting survivors of sexual assault and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions; and WHEREAS, prevention of sexual assault is possible when we increase awareness and community involvement; NOW THEREFORE, I, Verna Seal, Council President, on behalf of Allan Ekberg, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim April 2018: Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the City of Tukwila and encourage all citizens to join me in the special observance and join advocates and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual violence. Allan Ekberg, Ma 2 Office of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila has a long tradition of volunteerism that has continuously enhanced the quality of life within the community; and WHEREAS, the entire community can inspire, equip and mobilize people to take action that changes the world; and WHEREAS, local community service opportunities are available through the City of Tukwila, the faith community, public and private schools, businesses, civic organizations and community groups; and WHEREAS, the giving of oneself in service to another empowers the giver and the recipient; and WHEREAS, experience teaches us that government by itself cannot solve all of our nation's social problems; and WHEREAS, during 2017 volunteers donated more than 8,600 hours to City sponsored projects; and WHEREAS, by volunteering and recognizing those who serve, we can come together to make a difference; and WHEREAS, volunteers are vital to our future as the city of opportunity and the community of choice; NOW THEREFORE, I, Allan Ekberg, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim April 15-22, 2018: National Volunteer Week in the City of Tukwila and encourage all citizens to recognize the outstanding volunteer spirit that exists in our community.
