ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
March 21, 2018 5:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center
1.Call to Order:Chair Cynthia called the meeting to order at 5:02pm

Guests: Mia Navarro, City of Tukwila Community Engagement Manager, Vicky Carlson, City of
Tukwila Finance Department
Staff – Tracy Gallaway
3.Approval of Agenda: Sheila Coppola moved to accept the agenda. Trish Gilmore seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4.Approval of Minutes: Alex Villella moved to approve the minutes of February 10, 2018. Sheila
Coppola seconded the motion.
5.Special Presentation – City of Tukwila Strategic Plan and 2019-2020 Budget – Mia Navarro,
Community Engagement Manager
Handouts – 2019-2020 Budget & Strategic Plan Check-In
2012 Strategic Plan page 6 – Community Vision and City Mission
Description of the Priority Based Budget process. Goals are to add transparency to the process
and ensures that high priority programs are properly funded.
Mia will send the 2012 Strategic Plan document to Tracy and she will pass on to the TAC members.
There will be a public meeting held at Thorndyke Elementary on April 21 st 10am-12:30pm.
Commission members are urged to attend and pass on the meeting notice to other community
members.
6.Unfinished Business
a.Tukwila Arts Commission Logo – Alex Villella motioned to accept C3 for the colored logo,
Helen Enguerra
b.Community Connections – Cynthia Chesak and Sheila Coppola passed on hard copies of
lists they had prepared. Helen Enguerra and Yuriko Rollins had previously emailed lists.
Tracy will pass all information on to the Outreach subcommittee which will compile
everything into one list.
c.Fine Arts Show – There was a review of the tasks that need to be completed between
March and the show in May. Most of these are related to marketing and promotion of the
event. Trisha Gilmore has secured a judge. Tracy will be coordinating catering and
entertainment at the artist reception on May 11 th.

7.New Business
a.Arts Commission vacancy – Tracy confirmed that Brian Kennedy resigned from the Arts
Commission on February 26, 2018 after serving 22 years. Commission members shared
ideas for community members that might be interested in applying for the open seat. It
was agreed that potential members would be encouraged to come to the April and May
meetings, with hopes recommending an appointment to the Mayor’s office by June 2018.
8.Sub-Committee Reports
Commission members reviewed the subcommittees that were decided upon at the February
2018 meeting (retreat 2/10/18) and indicated which committees they would like to participate
on for the year.

b.Performing Arts – Cynthia, Yuriko, Helen
c.Outreach – Alex, Helen
9.Other
a.Staff liaison Tracy Gallaway reviewed a funding support request from Tukwila Parks and
Recreation. The following items were approved:
Backyard Wildlife Festival – Teaching Artist ($400), Musician ($400)
River Run 5K – Musician ($300)
See You in the Park – Tukwila Rocks Teaching Artist/Supplies for 3 events ($600)
Peanut Butter & Jam – Face painter for 3 events ($450)
Touch A Truck - Face painter ($300), Musician ($700)
Family Fest – Teaching artist – School Year Intention Project ($400), Drum Circle ($450)
Total approved spending: $4,000
10.Agenda for next meeting:
a.2018 Fine Arts Show – final event details
Adjournment: At 6:27pm Daniel Humkey moved to close the meeting. Sheila Coppola seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
