In the early morning hours of August 17, 2011, the Tukwila Fire Department responded
to an apartment fire in the 15000 block of Military Road South. Crews quickly called for
a second alarm when they discovered flames in the attic space. We had Mutual Aid from
the City of SeaTac, Burien, North Highline, Kent, King County Fire District 20, Zone 3
Fire Explorers, our department Chaplain and South King County Paramedics,
On arrival crews found smoke and fire from a second story apartment unit.
Two second story apartments were damaged by fire, three others on the first floor
sustained damage from smoke and or water. All five units were occupied. Red Cross
responded and is assisting them as needed.
The first 911 call came in at 12:47 am. Alert citizens assisted in waking up other
residents to help evacuate the building. Everyone was able to get out of the building, and
we have no reports of citizen injuries.
One firefighter was injured while battling the fire when saturated ceiling tiles fell on him.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
Damages are estimated to be around $175,000.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. At this time, the cause is unknown.
Our Fire Marshall is still on scene working the investigation.
