INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM
TO: Public Safety Committee
FROM: Bruce Linton, Chief of Police
BY: Eric Lund, Commander
CC: Mayor Ekberg
DATE: May 21, 2018
SUBJECT: On -Line Crime Reporting
ISSUE
The Tukwila Police Department is one of the few remaining police departments in the
area that have not implemented an online reporting service for its citizens and
businesses who are victims of crime. With the completion of the implementation of the
Spillman Records Management System in October 2016, which needed to be
established first, we are now ready to start this program and service for the city.
BACKGROUND
The Tukwila Police Department has partnered with Lexis -Nexis to create an on-line
reporting system, which will allow victims to report crime on-line, instead of having an
officer come to their residence or business.
The crimes that can be reported on line will be limited to certain crimes, and those that
have no suspect information. Crime victims will still call 911 to make a report, and will
be given the option of an officer responding to the scene to take the report, or using the
new on-line reporting system.
During certain times of the day, citizens will now have the on-line reporting option, which
will allow them to make a report immediately, and reduce the wait time for an officer to
respond to their location. This service will also provide more available time for officers,
in order to remain on patrol in the city for visibility and proactive patrol, and available for
higher priority calls for service.
The on-line reporting system is connected with our Spillman Records Management
System, and the data will import automatically for reporting and tracking purposes.
DISCUSSION
Department representatives will provide details and a demonstration of the on-line
reporting system and answer any questions of the committee.
