Staff updated the Committee on the status of staffing within the Fire Department. It is anticipated that seven to nine total employees will leave the department in 2018, depleting the pipeline positions previously approved by Council. Because retirements and departures are difficult to predict, it has been tricky to find the appropriate balance of pipeline positions. Staff proposes to have 63 total suppression employees in place by September, including three pipeline positions. The Committee asked how much was spent in overtime in 2016, 2017, and 2018 year to date, and staff agreed to follow up with that information. Councilmember McLeod asked for details on numbers of fire versus aid calls, and staff estimated that 68% are medical aid calls and 32% are any other types of calls. Staff presented the City apparatus units. The Committee asked how many were purchased, and staff will follow up. DISCUSSION ONLY.
