City of Tukwila
Allan Ekberg, Mayor
INFORMATIONAL MEMORANDUM
TO: Tukwila City Council
FROM: Stacy Hansen, Community Services & Engagement
CC: Mayor Ekberg
DATE: July 31, 2018
SUBJECT: Tukwila's Response to Homelessness
ISSUE
City Council has requested an update on city wide initiatives, policies, collaborations and
resources that focus on reducing the complicated circumstances for residents that are
experiencing homelessness.
BACKGROUND
During the 2017/18 budget discussions, Council members generously granted a $50,000
increase in the Human Services Professional Services budget to go towards serving our
community's most vulnerable populations. The Human Services Advisory Board made
recommendations to funding increases that further support the strategic goal of "A solid
foundation for all Tukwila residents.” Along with deepening external partnerships including at
the Tukwila School District, staff worked collaboratively on policies and initiatives that promote a
healthy and safe community for all residents.
DISCUSSION
Staff is pleased to share this information that highlights many new and existing partnerships
within the region. Working together allows us to share best practices, strategies and make
recommendations with a more holistic and comprehensive approach.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Costs shown in this presentation were previously allocated as part of the 2017/18 Professional
Services budget in the Human Services program.
RECOMMENDATION
Information and discussion only.
