Tukwila Library Advisory Board
MINUTES
June 5, 2018 5:30 p.m. Tukwila Community Center
1. Call to Order: Chair Scott Kruize called the meeting to order at 5:33 p.m.
2. Attendance:
a. Commissioners – Scott Kruize, Gerie Ventura, Linda McLeod, Marie Parrish, Steve Miller, Verna
Seal
b. KCLS– Angela Benedetti (KCLS)
c. City Staff – Stephanie Gardner-Brown
3. Agenda: Marie Parrish motioned to approve the agenda and accept the May 1, 2018 minutes with
spelling corrections. Verna Seal seconded the motion and there was unanimous approval.
4. Citizen Comment - None
5. Unfinished Business
a. The Board discussed providing a presentation to City Council and determined they would
th
like to present at the July 16 City Council meeting. The Board discussed sharing impact
stories and providing a library use update which may include data/statistics including
circulation, door counts, program highlights, meeting room use, and a general overview
from the past year. Angela Benedetti will provide a document with library data and
program overview. Stephanie Gardner-Brown will supply an expenditures overview and
facilitate the City Council process for presentation and document submission.
6. New Business
A. Summer Meeting Schedule: The Board discussed the summer meeting schedule,
Marie Parrish explained the Board does not typically meet in July and August and
members are encouraged to attend library and city events in place of meeting. Due to
the July 16, 2018 City Council presentation the board will meet in July. Marie Parrish
motioned to cancel the August, Verna Seal seconded the motion, the motion passed
unanimously. After more discussion, Steve Miller motioned to tentatively plan for a
September 11, 2018 meeting however if there is no business the meeting will be
canceled, Verna Seal seconded the motion, the motion passed unanimously.
7. Reports of Board Members/Announcements
a. Board Member (5 min)
i. Marie Parrish shared Sharon Kidd’s memorial tree at KCLS is in poor health. Angie
Benedetti is going to contact library facilities / landscape staff to look at the tree.
b. KCLS, Angie Benedetti distributed June activities calendar and summer reading program
information, this year’s theme is: Library’s Rock. She shared highlights from May

programming at the Library including Social Justice Wednesdays. Gerie Ventura shared her
experience from the Prime-Time program, a program that focuses on child and
parent/caregiver reading and literacy. Angie shared a new program called Fiestas, the
program will focus on promoting literacy within Spanish speaking families.
c. City of Tukwila: Stephanie Gardner-Brown shared summer event information including:
Family Fourth at Fort Dent, See You in the Parks, Touch a Truck and Emergency

Preparedness (also celebrating the Southcenter 50), Family Fest and Reading by the River.
8. Other –
a. Steve Miller shared his new album, a blend of rock, progressive rock, jazz and more.
9. Agenda for next meeting:
a. City Council Presentation
Adjournment: At 6:36 pm Gerie Ventura moved to close the meeting. Steve Miller seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
