HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-04-01 Proclamation - Sexual Assault Awareness Monthpr; Office of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every community; and WHEREAS, one in five women and one in 71 men will experience sexual assault or sexual harassment during their lifetime; and WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience a sexual assault before the age 18; and WHEREAS, young people experience heightened rates of sexual violence and youths 12 to 17 are 2.5 times more likely to be a victim of sexual assault; and WHEREAS, on campus one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college; and WHEREAS, we must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention, supporting survivors of sexual assault and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions; and WHEREAS, prevention of sexual assault is possible when we increase awareness and community involvement; NOW THEREFORE, I, Allan Ekberg, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim April 2019: Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the City of Tukwila and encourage residents to join advocates and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual violence.
