HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-05-05 Proclamation - National Day of Awareness for Missing Indigenous Women and Girls!V>Ai�1 1, m mi mrl i,u Y(rrr'1i r l ii�ivilri%� 'r�aaj i1lbJNrili lioiullnilfji �iItlNIUm:'.!I Office of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila stands with other tribal, regional, state and national governments and organizations in support of National Day of Awareness for Missing Indigenous Women and Girls; and WHEREAS, Indigenous women and girls go missing at a higher rate than any other ethnic group in the United States; and WHEREAS, the disappearances of Indigenous women and girls directly correlates to domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking; and WHEREAS, the City of Tukwila has close proximity to an international border and a large port both that have been proven to increase the recruitment, transportation and sale of people for labor; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice reports that more than four in five Indigenous women and girls experience violence during their lifetime; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that homicide is the third leading cause of death for Indigenous women and girls between the ages of ten and twenty-four, and the fifth leading cause of death for Indigenous women between the ages of twenty-five and thirty-four; NOW THEREFORE, I, Allan Ekberg, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, do hereby proclaim May 5, 2019 as: National Day of Awareness for Missing Indigenous Women and Girls in the City of Tukwila and encourage the Tukwila community to join me in raising awareness of this significant social issue.
