The City Council has not received a consistent message of all the services that the fire department provides to the community. Quarterly reports will be presented to City Council. BACKGROUND For the past 75 years the Community of Tukwila has received emergency services from a high preforming Fire Department. There has been a tradition for these past 75 years of providing a high level of service. One of the first Rescue Teams and Hazmat Teams in the State of Washington were developed in Tukwila. The City Council has been supportive by providing the funding necessary to provide this level of service. Adjustments have been made in the past decade to bring balance to the budget and service levels in the region, the Fire Department no longer staffs a Hazmat Team. DISCUSSION The attached PowerPoint report will provide a consistent message to City Council Members concerning the Fire Department operations that took place during the second quarter of 2019. FINANCIAL IMPACT There are no funding issues related to this report. RECOMMENDATION This report is for information only and will inform City Council Members concerning current status of this department and key responses during this period. Start updating the Fire Marshal's Office web page, so we can better serve our customers. Emergency Manager Academy: Battalion Chief Jason Konieczka has continued to work towards his degree from the Basic Emergency Management Academy offered by the State by completing the 3rd of the 5 classes needed. Tukwila will be hosting the next class in October. Jason was also accepted into Seattle Fire Department's Executive Leadership Academy which starts this month takes two years to complete. LPG Gas Event: In June the City had a challenging response to a propane leak which ended up requiring the removal of over 14,000 gallons of propane from three existing underground tanks at a business near Costco. The process was done over two separate days, and thanks to a unified effort from our neighboring Hazmat Teams as well as our Fire Department, Police and Public Works, we were able to safely mitigate the problem with the smallest amount of impact on the neighboring businesses. Grant Status: We used the current EMPG (Emergency Management Performance Grant) to purchase much needed MRE's to replace our outdated ones, as well as two new satellite phones: one for the EM50 and the second for the EOC. We have also filled out a pre -application for money to retrofit and remodel Station 54 through a Federal Grant. We are in the process of updating our Annex to King County's Hazard Mitigation Plan and have had two public outreach events as well as attending the County's workshops on the plan update. Social Media Plan: We have successfully launched Tukwila Fire Department on three platforms: Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Twitter is loved by the press since we are able to push out important messages in real time which helps them determine if they are going to send out a crew, while Instagram and Facebook are a great way to reach the public and share with them what is going on within the Department as well as being able to capture the Public Events we are able to attend.
