TUKWILA ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
June 26, 2019 6:00 p.m. Hazelnut Park/See You in the Park Event
1. Call to Order & Roll Call: Chair Cynthia Chesak called the meeting to order at 6:01pm.

Commission Members Absent: Noe Rodriguez, Helen Enguerra
Staff: Tracy Gallaway, TAC Liaison
Guests: Dylan Mahler FHS
2. Approval of Agenda: Sheila Coppola moved to accept the agenda. Trisha Gilmore seconded the motion. The
motion passed unanimously.
3. Approval of Minutes: Pinky Estell moved to accept the minutes for 4.24.19 and 5.15.19. Sheila Coppola
seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. Introduction of Guests: None
5. Unfinished Business:
a. Updates for Artist in Residence & Southcenter District Art Project (LTAC Funded)
i. Artist in Residence Program —Tracy Gallaway and the Artists in Residence, Olisa Enrico -Johnson and
Sarah Kavage presented a midterm report to the Community Development and Neighborhoods City
Council Committee on 6.25.19. Copies are available to commissioners for review (Pinky Estell
requested an electronic copy). Mural projects will be starting soon along Tukwila International
Boulevard and at the Tukwila Community Center.
ii. Southcenter District Art Project —Tracy Gallaway and project artist Beth Gahan presented a project
to the Tukwila Lodging Tax Advisory Board for funding. Copies of the presentation are available to
commissioners. LTAC recommended funding the project ($40,000) CDN reviewed the funding
request and passed it to the full City Council for approval (COW 6.15.19).
b. Arts & Humanities Month —The Arts Commission supported the idea of promoting October National
Arts & Humanities month. Information will be included in the fall Recreation Guide for a variety of
programs coordinated by City staff, Artists in Residence, Tukwila Library and other community
organizations.
c. Foster Performing Arts Center — Next steps for "State of the Foster PAC" Report (purpose is to make a
recommendation for moving forward with that facility (identify needed improvements, costs and
potential funding sources).

6. New Business:
a. Recommendation for Student Rep Appointment — Sheila Coppola made a motion to recommend Dylan
Mahler to be the student rep to the Tukwila Arts Commission. Pinky Estell seconded the motion. The
motion passed unanimously.
b. The 2019 Neddy at Cornish award application — Arts Commissioner Pinky Estell gave background about
the award opportunity. This is a visual arts call. The Commissioner agreed to include the information in
the next Arts & Culture eNewsletter.
7. Commission/Staff Report Outs:
Sheila Coppola — reported out about the Tukwila elementary students printing project and shared a copy of
the project that was distributed to students. Foster High School art students printed using linoleum and
Sheila is constructing a portfolio. These will be available by September.
Cynthia Chesak— Cynthia is working with Olisa (AiR TIB) for an Improv "Theater Sports" event this summer.
August 14 & 15 have been set for rehearsals and the performance/event will be held on August 16 at TCC.
Cynthia is recruiting local community members to participate in the event.
Trisha Gilmore — The senior painter class is the next show for the TCC Art Wall. Trisha will be working to
hang the show on July 1st. The senior show will be up until the end of August. John Taylor will be the next
artist showing on the wall, September and October 2019. John has received some funding from 4Culture
and has requested to have a reception. Staff will coordinate a date for the reception.
Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison — The next Arts & Culture eNewsletter will be sent out on June 28, 2019; There
is a community member that has inquired about teaching a figure drawing class. Tracy will be meeting to
discuss the proposal; Abdul Ndiaye, a resident and music producer, has expressed interest in serving on the
Arts Commission. Application materials will be sent to him; There are a couple UW interns working on a
project and they are gathering information regarding arts related businesses in Tukwila. Commissioner
Pinky Estell has agreed to work with them for this project.
8. Other — Pinky Estell inquired whether it would be appropriate to get apparel items for the Arts Commission,
so they are recognizable when they attend public events. Tracy Gallaway mentioned that she would be
ordering name badges for both Pinky and Dylan; she also said she would bring some apparel options to the
next meeting.
9. Agenda for Next/Future Meeting: Commissioners discussed summer events and vacations. Pinky Estell
moved to cancel the July Arts Commission meeting. Sheila Coppola seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously.
10. Adjournment: Sheila Coppola motioned to adjourn the meeting at 7:15pm. Trisha Gilmore seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Next meeting: Wednesday, August 28th, 6:OOpm at Tukwila Community Center
