HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-10-15 Community Development and Neighborhoods MinutesCity of Tukwila City Council Community Development & Neighborhoods Committee COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & NEIGHBORHOODS COMMITTEE Meeting Minutes October 15, 2019 - 5:30 p.m. - Hazelnut Conference Room, City Hall Councilmembers: De'Sean Quinn, Chair; Dennis Robertson, Verna Seal Staff: David Cline, Jack Pace, Brandon Miles, Laurel Humphrey CALL TO ORDER: Chair Quinn called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. I. PRESENTATIONS II. BUSINESS AGENDA A. Carryout Bag Ordinance Outreach Staff briefed the Committee on outreach efforts for the carryout bag ordinance, i.e. plastic bag ban, that will be considered by the Public Safety Committee on October 21, 2019. Staff is promoting the Public Hearing opportunity on November 12, 2019 to businesses and residents in various ways as well as briefing the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee and Equity and Social Justice Commission. Chair Quinn stated that if passed by Council he supports investing in the implementation effort and suggested providing reusable bags and partnering with others on swag for use at City events. He suggested outreach to youth in the community as they may be interested in testifying at the public hearing. DISCUSSION ONLY. III. MISCELLANEOUS Councilmember Seal mentioned that the Burien City Council has just adopted a suite of policies adding additional protections for renters and would like to investigate if any of these are possible in Tukwila due to the number of apartment complexes. Councilmembers Robertson and Quinn were supportive. Committee members and staff discussed the Committee work plan for the remainder of the year. Community Development & Neighborhoods Minutes October 15, 2019 Committee members and staff discussed the employee recognition effort that was previously discussed in Committee. The goal is to highlight exceptional work done by City employees in a public manner so that the community is more aware of high quality public service. Exceptional work includes going above and beyond the call of duty to help in the community. Staff will work to develop a nomination form for use by staff, managers, Councilmembers or the public. Attending a Council meeting will be optional for those nominated. This effort will be piloted in 2020. Adjourn, ed 6:05 p.m. Committee Chair Approval
