Showalter Kitchen Hood, Correction Letter #2
Mechanical Permit Application #M15-0149
To Whom It May Concern:
The Special Education room at Showalter Middle School serves student who require
instruction in basic functional life skills. To provide this, a stove is needed to for student to
practice cooking skills.
It has come to my attention that to get the permit to provide ventilation the city requires
confirmation that no meat will be cooked. Beginning today, no meat will be prepared on
the stove.

RE: Correction Letter # 2
MECHANICAL Permit Application Number M15-0149
SHOWALTER MIDDLE SCHOOL - 4628 S 144 ST
Dear JIM THOMAS,
Allan Ekberg, Mayor
Jack Pace, Director
This letter is to inform you of corrections that must be addressed before your development permit can be approved. All
correction requests from each department must be addressed at the same time and reflected on your drawings. I have
enclosed comments from the following departments:
FIRE DEPARTMENT: Al Metzler at 206-971-8718 if you have questions regarding these comments.
• IMC Table 507.2.2 states that pan frying requires a type 1 hood. Ms. Olsen's letter references the cooking of
Hamburger Helper which requires the pan frying of ground beef. There can be no pan frying of meat unless a type
1 hood is provided.
If Ms. Olsen would provide a letter stating there will be no pan frying of meat, the type 2 hood would then be
acceptable.
Please address the comments above in an itemized format with applicable revised plans, specifications, and/or other
documentation. The City requires that two (2) sets of revised plan pages, specifications and/or other documentation be
resubmitted with the appropriate revision block.
In order to better expedite your resubmittal, a'Revision Submittal Sheet' must accompany every resubmittal. I have
enclosed one for your convenience. Corrections/revisions must be made in person and will not be accepted through the mail
or by a messenger service.
If you have any questions, I can be reached at (206)431-3655.
Sincerely,
Bill Rambo

Showalter Middle School Mechanical Permit Comment Responses
Mechanical Permit Application Number M15-0149
Showalter Middle School — 4628 S 144 ST
This letter is in response to mechanical permit comments dated November 17, 2015 for
Showalter Middle School Special Education Remodel
Comment #1, comment #4 and fire comments #1 and #2 request clarification on the type of
hood installed above the electric domestic range located in the Special Education Classroom.
We have worked with school district to provide clarification regarding the type of cooking that
takes place in the Special Education Classroom and have attached a summary description to this
letter.
Based on the cooking activities described we believe that the use is consistent with that of a
residential domestic range in compliance with IMC Table 507.2.2.
We request that the domestic range and associated residential hood be accepted and given
approval for construction as designed.
Comment #2 — Please find attached drawing M2.1 indicating location of project.
Comment #3 — Please find attached wet stamped drawings and specifications.
Please let us know if there are any additional questions or clarifications.

Liliana Cardenas, to write a letter explaining the types of cooking will be occurring in my
classroom with students and why a residential stove hood is appropriate for this setting.
My curriculum addresses basic functional life skills. This requires me to be able to teach
students simple cooking techniques such as making their favorite foods so they will be able to
be more independent as they get older. The basic cooking/baking included items such as, but
not limited to: pizza, pancakes, grilled cheese sandwiches, warming up soup, boiling water, and
simple meals, for example: macaroni and cheese, spaghetti, rice, hamburger helper, etc.
This functional life skill encourages and fosters student independence. It should be noted that
this lays the ground work for the basic functional life skills expectations in the Foster High
School LRC2 program before the student leave the public school system.
We will be cooking/baking for the class which currently consists of 7 students and would not
exceed 15.
I hope this letter describes the need for the residential hood that the district is trying to get
permitted and installed in my classroom. This hood will be more than adequate for the cooking
that will occur in the classroom. There is no need for a commercial hood in my classroom.
If you have any questions or would like to talk to me further on this matter please fill free to
contact me at 206-901-7832 or at 253-376-4073. I can also be reached at my email
olsenj(ctukwila.wednet.edu. You may also reach out to our Director of Special Education, Joan
M Lawson at 206.901.8035 or at lawsonIc tukwila.wednet.edu.

Dear JIM THOMAS,
Jim Haggerton, Mayor
Jack Pace, Director
This letter is to inform you of corrections that must be addressed before your development permit can be approved. All
correction requests from each department must be addressed at the same time and reflected on your drawings. I have
enclosed comments from the following departments:
BUILDING - M DEPARTMENT: Allen Johannessen at 206-433-7163 if you have questions regarding these
comments.
• (GENERAL NOTE)
PLAN SUBMITTALS: (Min. size 11 x 17 to maximum size of 24x36; all sheets shall be the same size. New revised
plan sheets shall be the same size sheets as those previously submitted.)
(If applicable) "STAMP AND SIGNATURES" "Every page of a plan set must contain the seal/stamp, signature of
the licensee(s) who prepared or who had direct supervision over the preparation of the work, and date of signature.
Specifications that are prepared by or under the direct supervision of a licensee shall contain the seal/stamp,
signature of the licensee and the date of signature. If the "specifications" prepared by a licensee are a portion of a
bound specification document that contains specifications other than that of an engineering or land surveying
nature, the licensee need only seal/stamp that portion or portions of the documents for which the licensee is
responsible." It shall not be required to have each page of "specifications" to be stamped and signed. [Electronic
copies shall not be approved.] (WAC 196-23-010 & 196-23-020)
(BUILDING REVIEW NOTES)
1. The plan shows the installation of a domestic hood (Type II) over what appears to be a new stove. "Type II
hoods shall be installed above dishwashers and appliances that produce heat or moisture and do not produce grease
or smoke as a result of the cooking process". Where the stove is capable of "Roasting, pan frying and deep frying",
and it is not a residential type occupancy, a Type I hood shall be required. Show a Type I hood with all specific
details for hood construction to include penetrations through the roof or side mount type. Include methods/details
for maintenance of the exterior exhaust fan. Also specify if the stove is gas or electric. (IMC 507.2.2, TABLE
507.2.2, Washington State Amendments)
2. Plan does not give sufficient information showing where this is located in the building. Provide a building
footprint and cloud where this project is located.
3. If the penetrations extend through the soffit shown, provide details to show the penetrations meet clearances to
the Type II hood and any required fire stops for that soffit are maintained. (IMC 506.3)
4. Provide all documents and all plan sheets wet stamped and signed. See General Note above.

FIRE - M DEPARTMENT: Al Metzler at 206-971-8718 if you have questions regarding these comments.
• 1) Provide details of the hood being installed and its location.
2) Provide a detailed description of the types of cooking that will occur beneath the hood.
Please address the comments above in an itemized format with applicable revised plans, specifications, and/or other
documentation. The City requires that two (2) sets of revised plan pages, specifications and/or other documentation be
resubmitted with the appropriate revision block.
In order to better expedite your resubmittal, a 'Revision Submittal Sheet' must accompany every resubmittal. I have
enclosed one for your convenience. Corrections/revisions must be made in person and will not be accepted through the mail
or by a messenger service.
If you have any questions, I can be reached at (206)431-3655.
