Final inspection approval will be determined by the building inspector based on satisfactory completion of this requirement. 10: All electrical work shall be inspected and approved under a separate permit issued by the City of Tukwila Permit Center. 11: Preparation before concrete placement: Water shall be removed from place of deposit before concrete is placed unless a tremie is to be used or unless otherwise permitted by the building official. ENGINIURIN°G a:ORPORA€"i0N July 23rd, 2015 Father Due Nguyen St. Thomas Parish 4415 S. 140`h Street Tukwila, WA 98168 RE: St. Thomas Catholic Church Nave Wall Evaluation Dear Father Nguyen: REVIEWED FOR CODE COMPLIANCE APPROVED SEP 0 1 2015 City of Tukwila BUILDING DIVISION We writing to communicate our findings and recommendations from our July 20d', 2015, site visit to St. Thomas Church located in Tukwila, Washington. The visit was performed by Gregory Coons, PE, to evaluate the damage to the west wall and structural framing of the Nave. We were accompanied by Kevin Broderick, of Broderick Architects and Ed O'Connell, of O'Connell Legacy Builders. Findings and Recommendations: St. Thomas Church is a single story wood framed building. The roof is constructed of 5/8" plywood sheathing over 2 x 6 joists @ 16" on -center supported by 5 '/4" x 11 7/8" glue laminated purlins at 10'-0" on -center. The purlins are supported by glue laminated three -pin arches that span 60' and are spaced at 20'-0" on -center. Walls are 2 x 4 wood stud framing. The floor and foundations are conventional reinforced concrete on grade. At the time of our site visit, we found significant wood decay in the base of the glue laminated arch, and bearing wall framing, at the center of the west wall of the nave. The base plate of the arch is designed to resist the thrust induced by the three -pin arch design. However, failure of the wood fibers in lateral bearing has resulted in a lateral displacement of the arch approximately 1" to the west. We probed the arch base with a shape metal tool and found that the decay extended into the wood at least 5". Further failure of the arch base in lateral bearing could result in a structural collapse of the center portion of the Nave. We also observed bulges in the base of the west bearing wall, and decay in the plates and studs, indicating that the wall is unstable. We recommend temporarily shoring both sides of the damaged arch at the ridge, and supporting the arch at the wall per our emergency shoring plan, which is attached. As a permanent repair, we recommend replacing the base of the arch with a concrete pier. We recommend performing this work as quickly as possible.
