This permit shall become null and void if the work is not commenced within 180 days for the date of issuance, or if
the work is suspended or abandoned for a period of 180 days from the last inspection.
PERMIT CONDITIONS:
1: 'BUILDING PERMIT CONDITIONS'
2: Work shall be installed in accordance with the approved construction documents, and any changes made
during construction that are not in accordance with the approved construction documents shall be
resubmitted for approval.
3: All permits, inspection record card and approved construction documents shall be kept at the site of work
and shall be open to inspection by the Building Inspector until final inspection approval is granted.
4: All construction shall be done in conformance with the Washington State Building Code and the
Washington State Energy Code.
5: Fire retardant treated wood shall have a flame spread of not greater than 25. All materials shall bear
identification showing the fire performance rating thereof. Such identification shall be issued by an
approved agency having a service for inspection at the factory.
6: There shall be no occupancy of a building until final inspection has been completed and approved by
Tukwila building inspector. No exception.
7: Remove all demolition rubble and loose miscellaneous material from lot or parcel of ground, properly cap
the sanitary sewer connections, and properly fill or otherwise protect all basements, cellars, septic tanks,
wells, and other excavations. Final inspection approval will be determined by the building inspector based
on satisfactory completion of this requirement.
8: All electrical work shall be inspected and approved under a separate permit issued by the City of Tukwila
Permit Center.
VALIDITY OF PERMIT: The issuance or granting of a permit shall not be construed to be a permit for, or an
approval of, any violation of any of the provisions of the building code or of any other ordinances of the City
of Tukwila. Permits presuming to give authority to violate or cancel the provisions of the code or other
ordinances of the City of Tukwila shall not be valid. The issuance of a permit based on construction
documents and other data shall not prevent the Building Official from requiring the correction of errors in
the construction documents and other data.

LATERAL DESIGN SYNOPSIS
DESIGN LOADS
The design dead loads are the actual weight of the furniture and/or cabinets.
The gravity loads are typically office electronics. The pedestrian traffic is
supported directly on the flooring that is applied directly on the concrete slab on
grade typical in the mall.
The lateral forces are determined using the site specific acceleration factors given
by the USGS for the latitude and longitude of the site.
The Sds for the North Terminal is 0.961.
The force, Fp, for each piece of furniture is determined from ASCE 7-10 Section
13.3.1, Table 13.5-1 "Coefficients for Architectural Components".
DESCRIPTION
The entire space is underlain with a "subfloor" consisting of a base layer of 1/4"
MDF, 1/4" thick layer of MDF, protected by 1/4" layer of "Wonderboard".
The steel base plates for the "L" shaped surround frames and the anchors for the
"Wall of Wonder" totem anchor into the concrete slab beneath the floor.
The modules and love seat are supported on 1" square tube steel frames. The
modules are also bolted to the 6" square aluminum tube frame for lateral
stability.

The withdrawal strength
of screws from a commercially
available medium density fiberboard

Abstract
Tests carried out to determine the holding
strengths of various sizes of sheet metal type screws in
the face of a commercially available medium density
fiberboard (MDF) indicated that withdrawal strength
could be predicted by means of the following expression:

L = depth of embedment of the screw (in.)
Similarly, tests carried out to determine holding
strength in the edge of the MDF included in the tests
indicated that withdrawal strength could be predicted
by the following expression:
f = 18.4(IB)0.85D0.5(L — D/V.25
Withdrawal strengths were about 13 percent higher
when optimum pilot holes were used than when pilot
holes were not used.
The rational design of furniture to meet specified
strength and durability requirements demands that
methods be available for predicting the holding
strength of the fasteners used in its construction. In the
case of screws, there is little information available that
can be used to predict holding strength in medium
density fiberboard (MDF), which is used almost exclus-
ively in furniture, although considerable information is
available concerning screw holding strength in solid
wood and particleboard (3-7). Specifically, expressions
are lacking to predict the holding strength of screws as a
function of screw diameter and depth of embedment and
one or more mechanical properties of the board. A study
was carried out in order to obtain background infor-
mation concerning the holding strength of screws in a
typical commercially available MDF and then to formu-
late empirical expressions that could be used to esti-
mate face and edge screw holding strengths in this
material. As part of this study, tests were also carried
out to determine optimum pilot hole diameters for
screws in the face of the board.
Scope of the study
The following topics were included in this study:
1. Optimum pilot hole diameters for number 4A,
6A, 8A, 10A, 10AB, 12A, 14A, and 16A screws for face
withdrawal;
2. Face withdrawal strength versus seven depths of
penetration for 10A screws in 5/4-inch-thick board;
3. Face withdrawal strength of 10A screws embed-
ded through five thicknesses of MDF;
4. Face withdrawal strengths of 4A, 6A, 8AB,10A,
10AB, 12A, 14A, and 16A screws embedded through
7/8-inch-thick board;
5.Optimum pilot hole diameters for 6A, 8AB,10A,
12A, and 14A screws for edge withdrawal;
6. Edge withdrawal strength versus diameter,
depth of embedment, and internal bond strength (IB) for
6A, 8AB,10A,12A, and 14A screws embedded to either
three or five depths of penetration in five thicknesses of
board.
