Retreat - November 16, 2019
9:00 a.m. Tukwila Community Center/Executive Conference Room
1. Call to Order, Roll Call & Introduction of Guests: Chair Cynthia Chesak called the meeting to order at 9:01
am.
Attendance:
Commission Members Present: Cynthia Chesak, Pinky Estell, Sheila Coppola, Trisha Gilmore, Helen
Enguerra, Jaleh Sadravi, Shawn Belyea, Dylan Mahler
Staff: Tracy Gallaway, TAC Liaison
Guests: Artists in Residence, Sarah Kavage & Olisa Enrico -Johnson (via phone)
2. Approval of Agenda: Helen Enguerra moved to accept the agenda. Pinky Estell seconded the motion. The
motion passed unanimously.
3. Approval of Minutes: Pinky Estell moved to accept the minutes for 10.23.19 Trisha Gilmore seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. Unfinished Business:
a. Artist in Residence Program - Sarah Kavage and Olisa Enrico -Johnson (via phone) — discussed activities
since their mid-term report. There final report will be presented to the City Council in March 2020.
b. 2020 Workplan
a. Ongoing projects
i. Rotating Art Display at Tukwila Community Center —Trisha and Jaleh are working on revised
protocols for this program. Pinky and Tracy are working on putting together a recommendation
for improved lighting for the display walls.
ii. Public Art Inventory — This project is on hold until there is capacity (commissioner and staff) to
work on. There is potential for developing this as an internship project.
iii. Southcenter District Art Project — Artist Beth Gahan continues to work on this project, but there
are some City related issues regarding painting on streets and sidewalks that we are working
through. The arts commission can expect an update in spring 2020.
iv. Utility Box Art Project — Artist Beth Gahan is developing this project. The arts commission can
expect an update in spring 2020.
v. Rainier Symphony —The symphony season is underway. We are working with the symphony
regarding some additional items to include in their annual report.

c. Promoting Art in the Community -The arts commission discussed some ideas for how they could
support art in the community. These include creating:
i. Opportunities for Artists
1. Professional Development
2. Open Calls
a. Teaching artists for programs and events
b. Project based mini grants
ii. Opportunities for Admirers & Enthusiastic Supporters — continuing the monthly arts newsletter
so that they are aware of the opportunities to participate in art activities, or support community
artists.
iii. Partnership Opportunities
1. Ignition NW (Burning Man) — exploring the opportunity to work together for installations,
teaching artists and events; Commissioner Pinky Estell will be the lead on this partnership.
2. Tukwila School District — the arts commission is interested determining how they could best
support programming in the schools. There was discussion about inviting TSD art teachers
to a meeting in spring 2020.
3. KCLS Tukwila Library — continuing to partner with KCLS for programs and events.
iv. Free Workshop Series:
1. Arts Commissioner Workshop Series — Commissioners discussed each presenting a free arts
workshop. Here is the list of potential workshops (specific details will be determined at
January meeting):
• Sheila Coppola — Linocut Workshop
• Jaleh Sadravi — Family Friendly Art Workshop
• Cynthia Chesak — Improv Workshop
• Helen Enguerra — Samoan Dance Workshop
• Pinky Estell —Technical Theater Workshop
• Trisha Gilmore —Artist Professional Development Workshop
2. Other free workshops (that were successful in 2019) and the arts commission is interested
in bringing back in 2020 include Arabesque Watercolor, African Dance and Arts for All
Drawing.
5. Commission/Staff Report Outs:
o Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison —SAVE the DATE —Friday, December 61" from 6:00-8:OOpm we will be
celebrating the first year of Tukwila's Artist in Residency program. See attached flier. Feel free to
share with your network of friends and artists... everyone is welcome!
6. Agenda for Next/Future Meeting: 2020 Workshop ideas —details and dates
Adjournment: Sheila Coppola motioned to adjourn the meeting at 12:47pm. Helen Enguerra seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
