INCIDENT: King County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Involved Shooting at
510 8th St S.E. Auburn, WA on 19 Sept 2020
On 19 September 2020, at approximately 1505HRS a King County Sheriff’s Deputy
was in the area of Auburn Way South and 8th St S.E. when he was flagged down
and advised of an in progress domestic violence dispute. One of the involved
parties was reported to have been armed with a handgun. It is unclear if the
handgun was brandished or in-play during the domestic violence dispute. The
Deputy arrived at the residence moments later and contacted the involved parties
in the yard of the residence. During the contact the 32-year-old white male
resident became uncooperative with the Deputy and refused to obey multiple verbal
commands to keep his hands out of his pockets. Without warning, the male
suddenly reached into his pocket. Believing the male was retrieving a handgun
from his pocket, the Deputy fired and struck the male. The male was immediately
provided medical aid from the Deputy, Valley Regional Fire Authority, and King
County Medic one; however, the male died at the scene.
The Valley Independent Investigation team is in contact with the family of the
subject involved in this incident and will be keeping them informed of the progress
of the investigation.
The Valley Independent Investigative team (VIIT) is serving as the independent
investigative team for this incident. VIIT is a multi-agency team made up of
investigators from seven south King County Police Departments (Auburn, Des
Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle, and Tukwila). The King County
Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of VIIT. Because this incident occurred in
the City of Auburn and Auburn PD personnel responded to the scene following the
shooting, their staff have been excluded from this VIIT investigation.
Public notifications will be released weekly until the conclusion of the investigation.

As per Chapter 139-12 WAC, please note that information regarding any officer
involved shooting cannot be released by an independent investigation team without
first notifying the non-law enforcement community representative assigned to the
investigation and the family liaison of the involved subject. VIIT will endeavor to
incorporate questions received from the media into subsequent press releases.
