The proposed electrical work is not for the construction of a new building for rent, sale or lease. I understand that I may be waiving certain rights that I might otherwise have under state law in any decision to engage an unregistered contractor to perform construction work. URIE A. The shown installed walls were as observed during a site visit of August 19, 2016. The elevations shown are approximations, however the resulting wall heights and lengths in each section are based on the observations during that visit. 2. The steps in top of wall elevation are to the nearest 1/2 foot measurement. Shown top and bottom elevations are front and back grade elevations. 3. No significant trees of any kind were damaged, altered or removed for the construction of the shown walls. 4. This plan is prepared for the purpose of indicating the as -built retaining walls on site. In no way should it be used for any other purpose such as parking or landscaping design/layout. 5. The plan locations of the shown walls do not reflect a formal survey mapping but to realistically represent the wall dimensions and locations adequate for the intended purpose. No walls infringed on site perimeter property lines or required the damaging, alteration or removal of any significant trees. Only minor brush as affected in any area. 6. Reference is made to the record inspection letter of the installed walls prepared by this office and shown on this plan (updated with minor revisions). 7. All walls were backedby crushed rock fill: 8. Some areas of wall have drain pipe installed, however the drain pipe does not serve a purpose for these walls. They are loose placed blocks with open cracks between the blocks. Any ground water coming through the cracks is not objectionable for these wall locations. 9. All blocks were placed on a gravelbase except in several locations they were placed on dense original and well leveled native soils. In all locations the base is acceptable since the walls are flexible and very minor settlement will not damage :the : COPY •-^Y'~r 1,414 w/ 5— 3W 1-c dPia 1.4! :Awry 4tylotY•itUfriy446/4k X 5-1 2,A21 x6) ffrAM/1111‘ WALL PZAN • THIS DRAWING REPRESENTS AN AS-BU1LT DRAWING OF SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETED AND ENGINEER 1NSPECTED/DOCUMENTED BLOCK RETAINING WALLS FOR THIS SITE (See additional information in Notes, this sheet) ern* o 222/ .) 0 f 5 ott co If) Cgt Plan review approval is subject to errors and omissions Approval of construction documents does not authorize the violation of any adopted code or ordinance. MacVeigh, P.E. Civil Engineer/Small Site Geotechnical 14245 59th Ave. S. Tukwila, WA 98168 Cell: (206) 571-8794 City of Tukwila August 22, 2016 Attn: Planning Review/Building Official/Field Inspector Subject: "Eco -Block" Wall Evaluation/Engineer Field Inspection, New Temple Building, Sarana International Buddhist Center, 15241 51st Avenue S., Tukwila, WA 98168 (PN: 222304-9019) Dear Sir: As part of the ongoing development of the above site, several "Eco -Block" type walls have been installed. Most have been about 4 to 5 feet (two blocks) high. Two sizes of blocks are used. One is 2.5' x 2.5' x 5' and the other is 2' x 2' x 6'. While some theoretically have minor parking lot traffic loading, the walls in those areas are only two blocks high and any parking would be several feet in from the rear of the wall. They are by field inspection and experience found to be acceptable for installed locations. The two block high walls are mostly along the south and west areas of the site and retain compacted structural pit run fill. Along the north edge of the site, near the new temple building and its nearest parking area, a section of wall has been constructed using 2.5' x 2.5' x 5' blocks which is three blocks high, or about 7.5 feet. These were installed against a cut embankment approximately 6 to 7 feet high south of the site's north property line. in some sections a minor upsiope grade line exists to the property line. Observed soils in the full depth of the north wall cut prior to block placement indicates a uniform dense sandy silty loam. This soil is similar to that observed in all other areas of the site during soils investigation for on-site pavement drainage infiltration trenches. These higher three block high areas are evaluated in attached calculations. Based on the observed soils in that area the following design factors are used. A non -traffic soil surcharge of 20 psf is added to the overturning calculated forces. A soil equivalent density (active) of 15 pcf is used. This number, lower than often used, reflects the stability observed in the cut bank. (The new walls in this respect more realistically mimic a non-structural rockery than a full soil loaded retaining wall.) The usual Safety Factor of 1.5 is added to the design loading. They are still very substantial and retain a significant calculated margin of safety. 1 All blocks were placed on a proper crushed rock base or, in a few locations, on a smoothed and leveled undisturbed soil base. Most base embedment is at or more than the usual 6", however as observed some areas without this embedment are acceptable for this installation. The joints of the block rows are staggered and the blocks have top interlock strips or cast cross interlocks. Concerning footing drains, these are not necessary for these walls. Footing drains serve two purposes. First, they intercept lateral and collected surface flows and prevent their build-up behind an impermeable solid wall, such as a cast concrete wall. In this case the walls are loose placed blocks and no such build-up can occur. Secondly, they prevent any seepage out from the front of the wall which would be aesthetically unpleasing in appearance. In this installation, any appearance of seepage is acceptable to the site owners. Some footing drain piping has been installed but not connected anywhere. Based on the above discussion, the footing drains may be discontinued and no tie in to an outlet is necessary or recommended. Based on the observed installation, the blocks as placed are acceptable. Note that an additional 60 foot strip along the north wall may be added to the east in the future. It would be two 2.5' x 2.5' x 5' blocks high and would be acceptable without further evaluation. Attached are photographs of the north wall three block high section and the south and west two block high sections. Thank you for your assistance. Sin .erei Bruce S. MacVeigh, P.E.
