Special Presentation: Merna Hecht, Stories of Arrival Foster HS refugee and immigrant poetry/art project Merna shared some background about the project and examples of the stories recently completed. She was interested in finding out if anyone on the arts commission had a connection to a book publisher. The Arts Commission asked what other ways they could support the project, including inquiring if it would be possible to display the framed prints at TCC on the Nook Art Wall. Merna said that was possible and that she would connect with Tracy Gallaway to coordinate. She also mentioned there is an event scheduled for Wednesday, April 22nd from 5:00-7:00pm (location TBD) to celebrate the project. 5. Unfinished Business: 1. Follow up to 11.16.19 retreat- 2020 Workplan & Budget a. Ongoing projects Rotating Art Display at Tukwila Community Center —Trisha and Jaleh are working on revised protocols for this program. Pinky and Tracy are working on putting together a recommendation for improved lighting for the display walls. ii. Public Art Inventory — This project is on hold until there is capacity (commissioner and staff) to work on. There is potential for developing this as an internship project. iii. Rainier Symphony — Pink discussed the expanded report information that was requested from the symphony. The commission is interested in continuing to support the symphony and would like to encourage them to consider diverse music options for future concerts. Pinky Estell asked that Tracy Gallaway reach out to the symphony and thank them for the expanded report information. iv. Partnership Opportunities a) Ignition NW (Burning Man) — exploring the opportunity to work together for installations, teaching artists and events; Commissioner Pinky Estell will be the lead on this partnership. Pinky met with them again and here are some thoughts & ideas: Temporary Art Show in the Park — Pinky is going to schedule a meeting with the Reno Arts Commission to see how Tukwila Arts Commission could support something similar. They will fund the art install and de -install. Funding would be needed for the platforms/concrete base (pedestal or flat, with tie ins, also a power outlet, etc.). See You in the Park events — artists demo projects, TAC would pay for the supplies and they would arrange and pay for the teaching artists. TAC could have apart in selecting the artist (family friendly, all ages). Food Vendors — They have groups that do food — but this isn't an area we wouldn't pursue at this time. National Water Dance event — they have fire dancers... would there be an opportunity to connect for the event? TG will connect Karin with Tara. Questions How are promotions done? They have their own list and would promote their participation. For temporary art, what happens with vandalism — who's responsible? v. Free Workshop Series: a) Arts Commissioner Workshop Series — Commissioners discussed each presenting a free arts workshop. Here is the list of potential workshops: • Linocut Workshop (Sheila Coppola & Olisa Enrico -Johnson) • Improv Workshop (Cynthia Chesak) • Portfolio Workshop for Teens (Lily Hotchkiss & Trisha Gilmore) • Arabesque Watercolor Workshop (Amina Quirashi; support from Jaleh Sadravi) • Other ideas: Drawing, African Dance 6.
