TUKWILA ARTS COMMISSION
MINUTES
August 28, 2019 6:00 p.m. Tukwila Community Center/Executive Conference Room
1. Call to Order, Roll Call & Introduction of Guests: Chair Cynthia Chesak called the meeting to order at
6:01pm.
Attendance:
Commission Members Present: Cynthia Chesak, Pinky Estell, Sheila Coppola, Trisha Gilmore, Helen
Enguerra, Dylan Mahler
Commission Members Absent: Noe Rodriguez
Staff: Tracy Gallaway, TAC Liaison
Guests: Scott Severson, Richard Rabe
2. Approval of Agenda: Helen Enguerra moved to accept the agenda. Sheila Coppola seconded the motion. The
motion passed unanimously.
3. Approval of Minutes: Trisha Gilmore moved to accept the minutes for 6.26.19 Sheila Coppola seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. Unfinished Business:
a. Portfolio Printing Project – Sheila Coppola shared the portfolio.
b. PAC Assessment & Next Steps – Pinky Estell has prepared a list of stakeholders and will be completing
the assessment this fall.
c. Rotating Art Display Wall – Artist John Taylor’s display “Mr. Zig Zag at the Duwamish Curve Café” will be
up on the main art hall display area for September and October. The next artist on display will be Lily
Hotchkiss, for November and December.
d. Fall Arts Activities/National Arts & Humanities Month – several activities have been planned for this fall.
Tracy shared the Tukwila Fall Recreation Guide as a reference.
e. Updates for Artist in Residence & Southcenter District Art Project (LTAC Funded)
i. Artist in Residence Program
1. AiR River Artist Sarah Kavage hosted “Welcome to the Water” on Sunday, September 8th at the
Tukwila Community Center. The event was well attended and received a nice write-up from the
South Seattle Emerald. Thank you to Arts Commissioner Helen Enguerra for assisting at the
event!
2. AiR TIB Artist Olisa Enrico-Johnson has two active projects: TIB Mural Project and Stories of
Arrival (recording project). These projects will be continuing through the month of October.

3. Both artists, Olisa Enrico-Johnson and Sarah Kavage, will be wrapping up their residencies with
the City of Tukwila in the coming months. The artists will be preparing a final report that will be
ready for review at the November Arts Commission retreat.
ii. Southcenter District Art Project – Artist Beth Gahan is under contract and will be beginning work on
the Southcenter District Sidewalk Painting project.
5. New Business:
a. Arts Commission Application Review – Tracy Gallaway shared the application from Jaleh Sandravi.
6. Commission/Staff Report Outs:
Cynthia Chesak – Comedy Improv Sports event that was rescheduled to August 29, 2019.
Pinky Estell – September 3rd release/announcement for Artist in Residency
Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison – The next Arts & Culture eNewsletter will be sent out on September 6, 2019;
we have an opportunity to host the PNW National Water Dance event in Tukwila (April 2020); Forterra has
reached out for assistance on a mural project at the Knights Inn site (TIB). We are awaiting further details;
Earlier this week Brian Carter, Executive Director at KC 4Culture, came for a visit to learn about the Artist in
Residence program and other Tukwila arts related opportunities, interests and events.
7. Other
a. Apparel – Pinky asked about commissioners having the opportunity to purchase logo’d apparel. Tracy
will bring the catalogs to the October meeting.
b. Richard Rabe (meeting guest) – presented an idea to the commission about going for a World record
breaking totem pole attempt as a landmark for Tukwila. The current record is held by British Columbia
(176’); He also brought up an idea inspired by Georgetown mural “Greetings from Georgetown” – a
mural on the Klickitat wall – “Thank you Tukwila”.
8. Agenda for Next/Future Meeting: 2020 Retreat Planning
9. Adjournment: Pinky Estell motioned to adjourn the meeting at 7:20pm. Helen Enguerra seconded the
motion. The motion passed unanimously.
