The city pernits refaces and copy changes to existing freestanding signs under several different scenarios: 1. A freestanduig sipi that conf'omnts to the cwrent sign code is pennitted refaces and copy changes with a permit. 2. A ft•eestand tig simt that is not considered a freeway nmterchaitge sigm which was legally installed under die previous simm code but (foes not meet the current Sign Code, is pennitted to have refaces and copy changes for up to TEN years fi(nim the effective date of tlhe City's Simi Code (18-'4!10). A pennit is required for any reface or copy cham>,se. Please note, nhodifyiniu the sign height, nhcreasing the sign area, or relocatnmg the sigh is not permitted without bringitig the sig i into fill conformance twith the City's Simi Code. At die end of the tem year period the sign lnay renmaiu as -is indefinitely. however additional refaces or copy changes will require that die Simi be brought into conformance with the Sign Code. 3. A freestandutg simm that is considered a freeway interchange sign and was legally installed under the previous simt code is permitted to have refaces and copy changes for up to FIVE years fi-oni the effective (late of the City's Sign Code (3'24110). A pennit is regtiired for any reface or copy change. Please note.. umodifying the sign hei it, inn easing the sigh area, or relocating the sign is not pennitted. At the end of the five year period the sign nny reinaui as -is iimdefinitely, however any changes to the face or sticture of the sign will require that the sign be removed. 4. Freestanduhs signs that did not comply with tlme City's previous sign code, for example those that were installed while an area was in King County, are not perinitted to have any changes to the face or stnmctuie of the sign twidmout bringuhg the sipi into confoinance with die Sion Code. Staff can help you research previous permit history to determine if your existing freestanduhs siph was installed under die provisions of the City's previous Sisn Code. You will note that wider Section 1 of this sign pennit application additional signs are allowed for premises with over 300 feet of linear street fionitage or for coiner properties. Even if your property qualifies for this additional sipmage under Section 1 you will not be able to install it until any existing non -conforming signs) are renhoved (TAiC 1187,36.070).
