They proposed to remove the Pole sign that sits out by the coffee shack and replace it with a monument sign. However, it was discovered that under -ground utilities will prohibit the monument sign being placed there. They are now revising the plans to reface the pole sign. The Non -conforming application was sent out 3x and returned 'unclaimed' 3x, therefore, they are not registered as non- conforming. Are we going to allow a reface? Also, we may want to think ahead in regards to this property more than likely going through a Design Review (my guess since the new retailer is Jackson's and they are remodeling all stores) — which would trigger removal of the pole sign, and then we will have to deal with the UG utilities again. Please advise as to the what you would like me to do: Accept the revision to reface, or hand.this off to one of you to directly handle? The city permits refaces and copy changes to existing freestanding signs under several different scenarios: 1. A freestanding sign that conforms to the current sign code is permitted refaces and copy changes with a permit. A freestanding sign that is not considered a freeway intercbange sign, which -was legally installed under the previous sign code but does not meet the current Sign Code, is permitted to have refaces and copy changes for up to TEN years- from earsfrom the effective date of the City's Sign Code (8/24/10) if a Non -Conforming Sign Perot was obtained. A Non - Conforming Sign Permit is the only way to be allowed this 'grace period'. A permit is still required for any reface or copy change. At the end of the ten year grace period the sign may remain as -is indefinitely. however additional refaces or copy changes will require that the sign be brought into conformance with the Sign Code. Please note, modifying the sign height, increasing the sign area, or relocating the sign is not permitted without bringing the sign into fill] conformance with the City's Sign Code. 3. A freestanding sign that is considered a freeway interchange sign and was legally installed under the previous sign code is permitted to have refaces and copy changes for up to FIVE years from the effective date of the City's Sign Code (8/24/10). Freestanding signs that did not comply with the City's previous sign code, for example those that were installed while an area was in King Cominty, are not permitted to have any changes to the face or structure of the sign without bringing the sign into conformance with the Sign Code. Staff can help you research previous permit history to determine if ypermit existing freestanding sign -,vas installed tinder the provisions of the City's previous Sign Code, and if a Non -Conforming sign -,vas issued. The issuance of some signage within the City may require a permit from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). It is the applicant's responsibility to obtain all required permits from the appropriate governnment agency. For information on permits that may be required trot WSDOT call (360) 705-7296. The issuance of a sign permit shall not be construed to be a permit for. or an approval of, any violation of any of the provisions of this code or of any other ordinance of the City. Permits presuming to give authority to violate or cancel the provisions of this code or other ordinances of the City shall not be valid. The issuance of a permit based on construction documents and other data shall not prevent the Director from requiring correction of errors in the construction documents and other data (TMC 19.12.020 (C)). Pursuant to 'I'TAC 19.12.0150, sign permits shall be valid for 180 days from the date of issuance of the sign permit. The Director tnay approve one extension of up to 30 days if a written request is submitted to the City BEFORE expiration of the 180 day period. A final inspection of the sign is required for all signs when installation is complete. The applicant or installer is required to schedule the final Sion inspection through the City's huspection line at (2064.3 8-9350. The 4 -digit inspection code needed for scheduling the final Siert inspection is 1510. The applicant or installer does not need to be present for the final Sign inspection. It is the responsibility of the installer to obtain the electrical pennit and inspections from the City of Tukwila Permit Center at (206) 431-3670. The electrical inspector will need access to complete the Electrical portion of the inspection. The City's sign code permits a variety of building mounted signs. including wall signs, signs on am,'7mings, canopy signs and projecting signs. This sign permit application can be used to determine the total number of building mounted signs permitted for your business. The application also provides the specific code standards for the common types of building mounted signs; see TMC 19 Sian Code for details. Please note that you may not qualify for all signage types outlined in this application. Each public entrance is eligible for eitlmer a flush mounted wall sig' or an auvrming face sign.
