HomeMy WebLinkAboutCivilService 2012-01-11 MinutesCity of Tukwila 6200 Southcenter Boulevard Tukwila, Washington 98188 January 11, 2012 Jim Haggerton, Mayor The following commissioners attended the regularly scheduled meeting of the Tukwila Civil Service Commission: Dennis Sivak, Carol Zuvela, and Ron Johnston. Others in attendance were Police Chief Mike Villa, Fire Battalion Chief Dave Ewing, and Kim Gilman, HR Analyst. CALL TO ORDER 5:03 p.m. President Zuvela called the meeting to order. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOVED BY SIVAK, SECONDED BY JOHNSTON THAT THE MINUTES OF THE TUKWILA CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING HELD ON DECEMBER 5, 2011, BE APPROVED. MOTION CARRIED. GENERAL BUSINESS Per civil service rule, Dennis Sivak will serve as Chairperson during 2012 and Ron Johnston will fill the position of Vice Chair. Commissioners briefly discussed the meeting schedule for 2012. Meetings will occur the first Monday of the month, unless canceled or postponed by the Chair. However, due to the Labor Day Holiday in September, Commissioners will look at rescheduling September's meeting. Plans for that meeting will be set at the August meeting. FIRE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update B/C Ewing reported that the Fire Department is at full staff. POLICE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS Staffing Update Chief Villa reported that although 2 candidates started the Police Academy in November, 1 was terminated due to an integrity issue. There are 3 officers currently in the FTO program (1 lateral and 2 entry level) and all 3 officers are scheduled to come off in February. He noted that 1 entry level candidate recently failed the background process, and Phone: 206- 433 -1800 City Hall Fax: 206- 433 -1833 Website: www.ci.tukwila.wa.us subsequently was removed from the eligibility list. He further explained that half of all candidates that receive a tentative offer of employment with Tukwila fail the background check process. Chief Villa reported that due to a budget increase, the Police Department went from 68 officers to 71 officers. Above that, the department is authorized to have 4 pipeline positions. Oral boards for entry -level will occur at the end of January for 20 candidates. Eligibility lists for both lateral -entry (2 names) and certified -entry (1 name) were distributed for Commissioners' approval.
