5. New Business (25 minutes)
a. Guest Speaker — Ken Ryals, Executive Director KCLS Foundation
He has held this position the last 7 months. He is from Lakewood went to PLU. The foundation
role is in 3 areas: Funding is a key area (they drive fundraising to meet need of the library
system), Advocacy of the library system and causes of libraries for the public, Grant Making to
library system to provide outreach and innovation.
Ken Ryals presented a slide show about the foundation.
On a per capita basis, KCLS is the highest used digital library system in US. The Foundation is
looking at how to expand and serve the equity of the county and allow access to essential
services.
Ken was thanked for The Foundation support the provided the extra funding for an extra 2000
sq ft for the new library when it was built. He is looking for and open to ideas and discussions
on how to help our community now.
Philis Bodle talked about some of the to -go kits and and provide books to give away during
summer outreach activities. There is a possibility of partnering with the foundation for those in
the Tukwila area.
The board was reminded that tomorrow is National Library Giving Day. The foundation is
helping with this to raise funds for the library system.
6. Reports (20 min)
a. KCLS: Philis Bodle: Tukwila Library now has open hours Tue-Sat. with a max Capacity of 12 and
looking to expand to 22 in couple weeks. Tuesdays are the busiest day. The library is open with
(4) 1 hour blocks every other hour with cleaning on hours in between. Staff are on the floor
2
helping people with all their needs during open hours. If the public comes to the door during
the cleaning time, Ambassadors will give out holds or print jobs to those that come during those
times. The board members asked about capacity and mask wearing conflicts and the library at
the mall. Ambassadors help explain to those coming up and work with them to wait in line.
They try to grab or assist if they can, so the public does not have to go in but still get the service
they need. They have not had to turn anyone away yet that she knows of. One person did
refuse to wear a mask, but it was tied with some other complex issues and the person was
removed. Staff just remind people to always wear a mask and have not have other issues
related to mask wearing. The mall library is not currently open.
b. City of Tukwila: John Dunn: Staff sent out the Senior Scoop Newsletter that had the book club
information in it. It was opened by 109 people via email and distributed by print to 90 meal
recipients. Out of those, only 1 person responded. Based on these numbers, staff are not going
to pursue this program further. They will refer to the KCLS book clubs if they get inquiries. Once
programming returns to a sense of normalcy, staff will reassess and see if there is a greater
interest in providing a book club. Other items: Senior meal drop program is ending as most
seniors now have their vaccine. The Park and Play program is moving to 2 days a week at 3
parks instead of 3 days a week at schools and parks beginning April 20. There is a public
meeting for the Tukwila Pond Master Plan on April 21, 2021 at 6:30pm to 8:30pm. All are
invited and John will send an email to the board for information and link.
7. Other (5 minutes)
a. Discussion- Status of SHAG construction all around the same branch, and how it is/will affect
parking access for library users. Verna reported the Mayor is on the Nonprofit board and
continues to try to help. Will need to continue to monitor and work on it more as the
construction finishes up. Philis reported they are working on parking for Staff.
b. Discussion- How the Tukwila's school system plans for re -opening may impact library functions,
especially at the Tukwila Library location
8. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held on July 6, 2021. (John Dunn will send an email at the end
of April and May to the board to see if there is a need to meet in May or June.)
