TUKWILA ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES
May 26, 2021 - 6:00pm
Microsoft Teams Virtual Meeting
1. Call to Order, Roll Call & Introduction of Guests: Chair Trisha Gilmore called the meeting to order
at 6:06pm.
Attendance:
Commission Members Present: Trisha Gilmore Sheila Coppola, Pinky Estell, Helen Enguerra,
Cynthia Chesak, Jaleh Sadravi, and Dylan Mahler
Commission Members Absent: Shawn Belyea
Staff: Tracy Gallaway, Arts Commission staff liaison and Acting Parks & Recreation Director
Guests:
• Thanipa Suwanchote (potential student rep for 2021-2023 school year)
• Una McAlinden, Creative Strategy Solutions
2. Approval of Agenda: Cynthia Chesakto acceptthe agenda as presented. Sheila Coppola seconded
the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
3. Approval of Minutes: Helen Enguerra moved to accept the minutes for 4.28.21. Cynthia Chesak
seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. Special Presentation: Benefits & Process for Intentional Cultural Planning — Una McAlinden,
Creative Strategy Solutions. Una described how she has done cultural planning work with several
local arts commissions and other municipal government entities. Commission members asked
clarifying questions about ideas for engaging with the greater community and Una described some
of the strategies she used with the Bothell Arts Commission that have been successful (over the last
year in the virtual environment). Staff thanked Una for the discussion and noted that after the Arts
Commission has an opportunity to meet and discuss the ideas we would be back in touch.
5. Commission/Staff Rep Report Outs:
o Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison:
■ Utility Box Art Pilot Project — Call to Artist closed on April 30th. 29 people submitted
applications. The Art Jury reviewed and recommended working with 9 artists for the
pilot project.
■ Youth Art Classes in partnership with Arts Corps—The virtual art classes are
wrapping up. Tracy will be reaching out to Arts Corps to discuss opportunities for
future partnerships.
■ Tukwila Justice Center —TJC staff inquired as to whether the commission be
interested in a tour of the facility and the Arts Commissioners would like to schedule
a tour. Tracy will coordinate with the TJC staff for potential dates/times.
■ Juneteenth Celebration — Digital platform roadshow is being planned for the Yd
week of June. Flier will be available soon. Tracywill send out the flier with event
link to commissioners when its available.
■ Arts Globo—Partnering with Show Brazil for virtual art programs for youth ages 9-11
(4t" & 5t" grades) — two programs will be offered: Music & Video Production and
Song Writing. Both programs will begin in July, with students meeting 2x/week for 2
hours for 4 weeks (32 hours of program). The program will culminate with a
"showcase" that will be open to the student's family, friends, and program partners.
Limited capacity (5-10 students). This is a grant funded project. Potential for future
programming partnership.
o Dylan Mahler:
■ Art at FHS — In May, the FHS art committee is meeting for the final design proposal
meeting. Seating element in the central courtyard at Foster High School. Install over
the summer, with a tentative dedication date in early September.
■ Expanding network to get art opportunities out to students at Raisbeck Aviation HS.
■ Student Rep Position —position will be open as the current student rep (Dylan
Mahler) is graduating in June from Foster High School. He is planning to attend UC
Santa Cruz for post high school education. Tracy noted that Dylan has been notified
he was selected as one of the City of Tukwila Opportunity Scholarships. The City will
be acknowledging the award at the June 7, 2021, City Council meeting.
■ Aviation HS students — to expand network to get artist opportunities out to students.
They do not have a lot of classes in the arts. How could they work with the Arts
Commission? Dylan suggests setting up a meeting with Tracy, Dylan & Honey, and
reps from Aviation HS.
o Pinky Estell:
■ Iron Monkey (sculptural work) temporary art exhibits in the park— Shawn has been
in discussions with the artists/organization. He will provide an update at the June
meeting.
■ Pinky met a local artist that lives in Tukwila (near TCC by the walking bridge, north of
TCC, faces the river and faces the bridge) — offered the wall (and potential $ support
of the project) for a mural project.
■ American Relief Funds— TAC is interested in potential funding for art related
projects and programs in Tukwila. Pinky and Sheila are meeting to discuss some
ideas they have for funding.
6. Agenda for Future Meetings: Rainier Symphony, Utility Box Art, Strategic Planning, Tukwila Legacy
Trail tour, potential community mural project
7. Adjournment: Sheila Coppola motioned to adjourn the meeting at 7:40pm Pinky Estell seconded
the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
