WSU grad in Therapeutic Recreation. Started when Tukwila was only 3500 residents. She started with the community center was in the old SouthPark elementary school building and helped develop the current Tukwila Community Center. Senior programs started in a little house on interurban years ago. Senior programs have always offered Trips, tours, classes, art, Meals On Wheels, lunch, and other services. Tukwila provides the only Volleyball league for seniors over 50 in King County. There is a Softball team not funded by Tukwila but wears the name after funding was cut to the program in 2010. During Covid the motto has been, "Our doors may be closed but we are still open". Between providing meals and services, Senior programs have still been connecting with Tukwila seniors. After being awarded the King County Senior Leve Grant, could not spend the money of the planned programs due to the start of Covid. Sheri then started the meal delivery program. After a year, 23,000 meals were delivered. She was also able to provide some virtual classes, including art and fitness. Tukwila Senior Programs have been awarded another $115,000 grant over the next 2 years. Part of this grant is $23,000 that will be spend as a hub with Burien for Veteran programs. The purpose of this grant is to be used for social engagement. Tukwila has already planned for 5 events held before the end of 2021. These events will help the community by hiring local food vendors, entertainment, and artists. In addition to the veteran events, there will be a couple events for the general senior population including thanksgiving, picnics, and day of giving with seahawk retired players. The plan for next year is to focus on different cultures by reaching out to the community leaders in those cultures. Even with all these plans, Sheri is looking for input on ideas for other social engagement for the next year and 2 a half. After questions and discussions, Sheri will bring the senior scoop newsletter to the library. Another positive for seniors in Tukwila is that Sheri has developed many relations ships with other cities and the as led to sharing services with other cities. b. City of Tukwila Boards & Commission members may choose to not wear a mask while meeting if they have been fully vaccinated and fill out an attestation form to this.
