Overview
• Quick overview of this presentation/discussion:
• The City has been exploring options for regionalization of fire services for
many years.
• Proposed next step: create community advisory committee to review
options and provide recommendations back to city council
• Tonight: input on proposed process; we can bring back edits next week; only formal
action anticipated is Council's confirmation of Community Advisory Committee
membership
Why are we talking about this?
• Regionalization of fire service is an ongoing trend in our region
• Cost of service
• Competition to fund other services from same revenue
• Desire to maintain high quality services
• Desire to capture potential economies of scale
Where are we in the process?
Multi -departmental team created earlier this year.
• Consultant teams brought on board in June
• Internal Team has met 10 times
• Identify and gather information on feasible alternatives.
• Develop financial model: cost of maintaining current department.
What is the proposal for the community
advisory committee structure/process?
• Outlined in Packet Materials (p. 127 +)
• Membership -10-13 community members
• Timeline: start in October, report back by next April
• Mission: 5 tasks
• Meetings —expect nine, two-hour virtual meetings
• Facilitator shapes process, agendas and facilitates meetings
• Chair and Co -Chair assist with agendas
• Meetings will be public
• Parallel/joint council discussion
• Union representatives can offer comment
