TUKWILA ARTS COMMISSION (DRAFT) MINUTES
July 28, 2001 - 6: OOpm
Tukwila Community Center & Microsoft Teams Virtual Meeting
1. Call to Order, Land Acknowledgement, Roll Call & Introduction of Guests: Chair
Trisha Gilmore called the meeting to order at 6:02pm.
Attendance:
Commission Members Present: Trisha Gilmore, Sheila Coppola, Pinky Estell, Helen
Enguerra (Teams), Cynthia Chesak, and Shawn Belyea
Commission Members Absent: Jaleh Sadravi
Staff: Tracy Gallaway, Arts Commission staff liaison and Acting Parks & Recreation Director
Guests: Thanipa Suwanchote (City Council Confirmation to student rep position on 8.2.21)
Susan Reynolds (Vice President), Jeff Lund (Music Director), and Eric Tishkoff (President), Rainier
Symphony

2. Approval of Agenda: Sheila Coppola to accept the agenda as presented. Cynthia Chesak
seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
3. Approval of Minutes: Cynthia Chesak moved to accept the minutes for 6.23.21. Pinky
Estell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. New Business:
• Rainier Symphony Update — Susan Reynolds, Jeff Lund (Music Director), and
Eric Tishkoff (President) presented an overview of plans for the 2021-2022 symphony
season.
• "Building Bridges" Art Project — Quena Batres, Trust for Public Land in
collaboration with Global to Local and the Somali Health Board. This project is an
opportunity for local Muslim -American artists to facilitate joyful community arts and
cultural activities and/or installations in and around Cascade View Park and the Greater
Tukwila and Seatac area, with a focus on building bridges between the Muslim
community and their neighbors. (Presentation attached).
5. Unfinished Business:
"Benefits & Process for Intentional Cultural Planning" - Commissioners reviewed the process
overview document prepared by Una McAlinden, Creative Strategy Solutions.
Suggested strategies include:
o Phase la — Fall 2021: Preparation and Design
o Phase lb — Fall 2021: Context Analysis & Environmental Scan
o Phase 2 — Fall 2021: Community Engagement (Long Range Vision)
o Phase 3 — early 2022: Developing the Core Plan — The Practical
Framework, Underlying Contradictions, Strategic Directions
o Phase 4 — early 2022: Implementation
o Phase 5 — ongoing: Annual Review & Update

Cynthia Chesak made a motion to contract with Una McAlinden, Creative Strategy Solutions to
develop a Strategic Plan, Helen Enguerra seconded the motion. Tracy will work with Una for the
contract scope and report back to the Arts Commission with next steps.
6. Commission/Staff Rep Report Outs:
• Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison:
o Utility Box Art Pilot Project — In most cases, final designs have
been submitted to the vendor. Installation is scheduled for the week of
August 23.
o Park Arts/Mural Projects — 46 artist applicants for 20
opportunities. These include 10 mural locations and 10 banner
locations. Artists are working on projects now and in August.
o Art@Baker Blvd Phase 2 — ground mural at Christensen and
Baker Blvd., sidewalk murals between Baker Blvd, along Christensen
Road and West Valley Hwy (other side of the pedestrian bridge).
o Aviation HS student projects — Darren Hawkins is meeting with
AHS students to collaborate for art programming at TCC this fall. Arts
Commission rep to assist and advise — Sheila Coppola
o Annual event to celebrate the art and artists: Olena/Tracy are
proposing that the Arts Commission host a fall event to celebrate the art
and artists who have had projects in Tukwila this summer.
• Virtual map of art locations and updated website (working
in partnership with Experience Tukwila and Seattle Southside
Scenes Campaign.
7. Agenda for Future Meetings: Tukwila Legacy Trail tour
8. Adjournment: Sheila Coppola motioned to adjourn the meeting at 6:55pm Shawn
Belyea seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
