HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOW 2022-01-10 Item 5E - Powerpoint Presentation - Recent Snow Response Update2021-22 SNOW & ICE RESPONSE JANUARY 10, 2022 190IS FE Of 'ON • Winter Operations All Staff Meeting & Training - Held the first week of November. • Command Staff Meeting — Prior to forecasted winter event. • Road Closure Sign Staging - Identified steep streets. • Vehicle Preparation - Plow trucks, deicer, sanders & salt spreaders. • Supply Inventory - Deicer, sand & salt. EVENT TIMELINE • On Christmas night at midnight, Streets Superintendent, Scott Mitchell was onsite to assess roads and bridge decks. • By 2 AM, Small trucks were deployed & out on the road laying down deicer product on roads and bridge decks. • Sunday, December 26, 2021, snowfall accumulation began to occur in Tukwila associated with the forecasted regional snow event. • At 8 AM crews began plowing City streets on 12 -hour shifts. BACKGROUND • Snowfall continued into the morning, tapering off on Sunday afternoon with cold Frigid temperatures. • Bus shelters along Tukwila International Boulevard were maintained by City crews and had salt applied in and around the bus stops . • King County Metro is responsible for maintaining all other bus shelters, including snow removal, within the City limits. EVENT TIMELINE • Wednesday, the 28th was the second forecasted snow event. Here comes part II. • Crews are back on 12 hour shifts beginning at midnight through Thursday evening. • Overall, approximately 4 inches of snow were on the ground at peak accumulation and by mid -week an additional 2 inches of snowfall occurred. • 3 Day weekend (over the new year) standby crew was assembled. ' TUKWILA ALLENTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD r COORDINATION AND TEAMWORK BETWEEN TUKWILA PW, PD & FD PD called in several times when snow related collisions happened; PW responded to address the trouble spots PW staff cleared the Justice Center parking lot PW staff worked with the Fire Marshal's office to clear Fire stations from snow and ice PW staff assisted the school district Parks maintenance staff key to clearing parks and TCC Emergency Manager coordinated regional communication and identified extra sources of sand when City staff were running short PW staff worked with communications to advertise road closures, WM delays & boost snow/ice map to top of red bar on website 410 • i r WM services are interrupted Dec 25-Jan2 Due to slippery roads and unsafe conditions WM services were delayed WM updates their website and also communicated to the City staff by email City staff updated social media sites WM resumed the services the week of Jan 3rd and updates alerts on their website City pushed information out on WM delays over City social media channels • QUESTIONS?
