The City's sign code permits a variety of building mounted signs, including wall signs, signs on awnings, canopy signs and
projecting signs. This sign permit application can be used to determine the total number of building mounted signs permitted
for your business. The application also provides the specific code standards for the common types of building mounted signs;
see TMC 19 Sign Code for details. Please note that you may not qualify for all signage types outlined in this application.
Wall Sign
Each public entrance is eligible for either a flush mounted wall sign or an awning face sign.
In some cases an additional wall sign maybe permitted on walls that do not have entrances, see Section 2 of this application.
Use the table below to determine the maximum permitted size' of your wall sign:

Hi Mike —
So here is what my research has uncovered:
The cabinet sign that is currently there was once located further down the wall to the south. This was when Credit
Concepts occupied a larger suite. With that said, IF that cabinet is truly 51 sq ft, it did not make code in 2005 if the
wall space was truly calculated out at 915sq ft (which is what the 2005 permit shows). A wall space of 915 would
have allowed for a maximum of 41.6sq ft.
So, I am not sure if it was a typo arid the original wall space was actually larger, thus allowing for a 51 sgft
cabinet/sign, or if it somehow got mis-read as being 41sq ft as opposed to 51sq ft. I am just not entirely sure which
side the error came from — wall space, or sign area.
However, unfortunately, that is a moot point now.
From the photograph we have on file from 2005, it looks like Credit Concepts physically moved the cabinet/sign
down towards the end of the building — where it is now shown in the picture you provided. I am assuming this took
place when a tenant improvement was completed to create 2 spaces, and another business went in (I think it was a
beauty supply place). I am still trying to find those particular permits.
With that all said, the cabinet is too large for that space that is going to be occupied by Uber.
You DO get to calculate in the wall space of that piece of the building that sort of juts out between the two tenants.
I drove by and it appears that the space is divided down the middle from the middle point of that piece of the
building. If that is the case, then calculate in that area and lets' see what we come up with.
Just fyi from our code:
19.08.240 "Sign Area"
Sign Area means the entire area within a continuous
perimeter, composed of straight lines or arcs, enclosing all
elements of the sign copy, including text, Togo and designs,
together with any frame or other material or color forming an
integral part of the display or used to differentiate the sign from
the background against which it is placed. The area of a threedimensional
sign shall be the surface area of a geometric figure
such as sphere, rectangle or cylinder that completely contains
the sign element.
I hope that all made sense.
Send me new wall calcs and let's go from there.
— Teri
