ORDINANCE NO. 236.
An Ordinance providing for protection against fires.. Specifying
duties and powers of the Fire Chief and members of the Fire Depart-
ment, prohibiting interference wthth them while in the performance
of their duties; misuse of the Fire Alarm System of the town;, pro
hibiting interference by unauthorized persons with the fire appar-
atus of said town; prohibiting the use or molesting of fire extin-
guishers, fire hydrants, firelanes, fire hose oe fire nozzles, except
in case of fire; also regulating traffic and giving the Fire Department
right of way and prescribing penalties for the violation of this
ordinance.
Section 1.. The constitution and by laws of the Tukwil p art
ment, and as amended, are hereby adopted by the Town of Tukwila and
by reference made a part of this ordinance as though specifically set
forth herein.

Section 2. No person shall use fire hydrants in the corporate limit
of the Town of Tukwila except members of the Fire Department and
Water Department, without the permission of the Fire Chief. A clear-
ance of thirty(30) feet shall be allowed &n each side of a fire hy-
drant, standpipe or firelane.
Section 3. It sh &ll.be unlawful for any person or vehicle to travel
or stop on any firelane except firemen or the Street Superintendent
on Fire Department business.
Section 4. No one other than members of the Fire Department, except
by direction of the Fire Chief, shall be permitted on the Fire Trucks
and no person shall in any way interfere with firemen while on duty
at a fire or at drill.
Section 5. It shall be unlawful for a property owner to allow over-
hanging limbs of trees to grow lower than fifteen(15) feet over
street or sidewalk.
Section 6. Any person who shall willfully make any false alarm of
fire shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.
Section 7. It shall be unlawful for the operator of any vehicle,
other than an authorized emergency vehicle on official business, to
follow any fire apparatus proceeding in response to a fire alarm at
a distance of less than five hundred(500) feet or drive or park such
vehicle within two hundred(200) feet of fire apparatus stopped in
answer to fire alarm.
Section 8. It shall be unlawful for the operator of any vehicle to
operate over any unprotected hose of a Fire Department, when laid
down on any public highway or any private road, street, way or alley.
Section 9. It shall be unlawful for any person operating any vehicle
upon any public gighway to fail, refuse ob neglect to obey all sig-
nals of any police officer or duly authorized flagman who is at the
time discharging the duty of regulating and directing traffic.
Section 10. The fire trucks and fire apparatus and members of
the Fire Department, while on duty at a fire or
drill, shall have the right of way over pedestrians or other
vehicles and no traffic shall be permitted on the streets while
firemen are responding to an alarm. upon the immediate approach of
an authorized emergency vehicle, when the driver is giving audible
signal by siren or bell, the driver of every other vehicle shall
yield the right of way and shall immediately drive to a position
parallel to, and as close as posible to, the right hand edge or ombb
of the public highway, clear of any intersection, and shall stop and
remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has
passed, except when otherwise directed by a Police Officer. then the
operator of any vehicle is complying with the provisions of this sec-
tion, he shall give proper hand signal indicating his intended move-
ment
Section 11. During periods of fire danger, such to be determined
and declared by the Chief, anyone desiring to start a
fire other than in a screened trash burner or confined pit during
said period of fire danger shall procure a fire permit from the hiei
or his representatives. The permitee shall comply with all the terms
and conditions of the permit, and shall keep a responsible person in
charge of the fire at all times, who shall hold the fire under contrc
and not permit it to spread to other property or structures, and sha:
thoroughly extinguish the fire when the authorized burning is com-
pleted. The possession of such a permit shall not relieve the permit
tee from liability for any damage resulting from the fire for which
he may otherwise be liable. Any person failing to procure a permit
during said declared danger periods shall be deemed guilty of a mis-
demeanor.
Section 12. Any violation or failure to comply with any of the pro-
visions of said sections of this ordinance shall con-
stitute a misdemeanor and upon convicsion thereof shall subject the
offender to a fine of not more than $100.00 or to imprisonment for a
period not to exceed thirty(3U) days, or by both such fine and im-
prisonment.
Section 13. If any section, paragraph or portion of this ordinance
shall, for any reason, be held by a court of competent jurisdiction
to be unconstitutional or invalid, such ruling shall not effect the
remaining terms, parts or provisions of this ordinance.
Section 14. This ordinance shall become effective five(5) days
after its passage, signing and posting as required by law.
PASSED the Town Council and approved by the Mayor this 2nd day of
July 1956.
