(Please limit your response to 500 words or less.) After residing in Tukwila for approximately 3 years, and King County for 5 years, I feel prepared to enter into a position where I am able to engage more closely with the community. I have enjoyed the various art projects around Tukwila when taking walks with my partner and dog, such as the sculpture in front of the City building or the mural at Tukwila Park. I have been a teacher and administrator, as well as active in my community as a journalist with a particular focus on arts and diversity and equity (recently, I wrote about the Foster High School poetry project which accompanying visual art was shown at Tukwila Community Center). I hold an advanced degree in the history of the arts and have tutored and taught the subject for many years, which I believe will also assist on this particular Commission. (Please limit your response to 500 words or less.) I have been a resident of Tukwila for the last five years and am raising my two young children in this community. I am committed to learning more about this community and having a positive impact upon it. I love that Tukwila has so many immigrant communities, and want to celebrate the diversity of culture that exists within this city, with a particular lens on creating and perpetuating policies that work toward an antiracist future. I have been a classroom teacher in the city of Seattle for 6 years, and am now a stay at home parent working on my Masters thesis in Leadership for Sustainability. I have previously worked for educational non -profits that aim to bring equity and access to environmental and nutritional education and resources to historically disadvantaged communities. My experience working with families and the broader community contexts in which they exist is a benefit to serving on a board. I am committed to involving myself more deeply in the Tukwila community. This is an entry point at this moment in time with fewer current time commitments. My particular area of strength is in bringing folks together across difference to work together on a commmon problem or issue. I have done this time and time again in my classroom with children and have also done so at parent meetings, community meetings, and among colleagues. I believe it is at the intersection of difference that we can find the grounds upon which we can work towards a common goal. This is why I would be interested in serving on any committee, board, or commission, because it is through this lens that I would operate. I am examining it within myself and how I can utilize this research and understanding to impact my work as a leader who works towards an antiracist future where all life can thrive.
