TUKWILA ARTS COMMISSION DRAFT MINUTES
December 1, 2021 - 6:00pm
Tukwila Community Center & Microsoft Teams Virtual Meeting
1. Call to Order, Land Acknowledgement, Roll Call & Introduction of Guests: Chair Trisha Gilmore
called the meeting to order at 6:02pm.
Attendance:
Commission Members Present: Trisha Gilmore, Sheila Coppola, Pinky Estell, Cynthia Chesak, Shawn
Belyea, and Thanipa (Honey) Suwanchote
Commission Members Absent: Helen Enguerra
Staff: Tracy Gallaway, Arts Commission staff liaison/Parks & Recreation Director
Guests: None
2. Approval of Agenda: Cynthia Chesak to accept the agenda as presented. Sheila Coppola seconded
the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
3. Approval of Minutes: Shawn Belyea moved to accept the minutes for 7.28.21. Pinky Estell
seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4. New Business: Staff liaison Tracy Gallaway provided an overview of the City of Tukwila Equity
Policy.
5. Commission/Staff Rep Report Outs:
• Pinky Estell: Tukwila School District staff reached out to Pinky to let him know that the
Performing Arts Center at Foster High School is going to be renovated with the project
beginning in summer 2022.
• Thanipa (Honey) Suwanchote, Student Rep:
o Honey reported that through some community engagement with FHS students it
was determined that the students are interested in having more artwork at FHS.
Honey noted that Mr. Sarino is working on a mural project with students. Tracy
asked to be connected to Mr. Sarino to see if there is any support the Arts
Commission could provide for the project or other art initiatives in the district. Arts
Commissioners also discussed several ideas for working with TSD schools for other
art pieces within school facilities — either from the city collection, the county, or
state collection.
o Honey also noted that Mr. Crawford will be livestreaming the upcoming Rainier
Symphony concerts on December 11th (7:30pm) & December 12th (3:00pm).

• Shawn Belyea & Sheila Coppola: Shawn and Sheila gave the Arts Commission an update on
the public art inventory project they have been working on. They are currently updating the
public art database as they inventory and assess the artwork. Currently they are about 1/3
of the way through the collection that is currently at TCC. They are making notes on needed
repairs that can be done in 2021 or 2022. Once all the items have been inventoried and
repaired, they will work on relocating artwork in city facilities.
• Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison:
o Aviation HS student projects — Darren Hawkins has been working with AHS students
to collaborate for art programming in the after-school program at TCC. It has been a
great partnership and provided an opportunity for the AHS students to teach Social
Emotional Learning (SEL) using art.
o Rainier Symphony—Tickets were distributed to Arts Commission members and
given to the Senior Programs Coordinator for distribution to seniors participating in
programs at TCC.
6. Other
• 2022 Retreat — The Arts Commissioners suggested scheduling a retreat in the first quarter of
2022 to plan for the year's activities.
• Tukwila Kids Make Music funding request: The Arts Commission received a funding request
to support the program since their previous grant funding for the program expired. Shawn
Belyea made a motion to provide the program $1,500 from the 2021 budget and Trisha
Gilmore seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The Arts Commission
expressed interest in providing additional funding in the 2022 budget.
7. Agenda for Future Meetings: Tukwila Legacy Trail tour, 2022 Retreat and Strategic Planning,
Funding support for FHS Mural Project and the Tukwila Kids Make Music.
8. Adjournment: Sheila Coppola motioned to adjourn the meeting at 6:52pm Shawn Belyea seconded
the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
