Call to Order, Land Acknowledgement, Roll Call & Introduction of Guests: Staff Liaison called the meeting to order at 6:02pm. Attendance: Commission Members Present: Sheila Coppola, Pinky Estell, Cynthia Chesak, Kai Curry and Thanipa (Honey) Suwanchote Commission Members Absent: Shawn Belyea Staff: Tracy Gallaway, Parks & Recreation Director (Arts Commission Liaison), Michael May, Parks & Recreation Manager (new Arts Commission Liaison) Guests: None 1. Approval of Agenda: Sheila Coppola asked to amend the agenda to include the proposal by artist Jacoub Reyes. Cynthia Chesak to accept the agenda as amended. Sheila Coppola seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 1. Approval of Minutes: Cynthia Chesak moved to accept the minutes for 12.1.21. Pinky Estell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 1. Unfinished Business: o Public Art Collection Inventory & Maintenance Project o Sheila Coppola: Sheila gave the Arts Commission an update on the public art inventory project she and Shawn have been working on. They are currently updating the public art database as they inventory and assess the artwork. Currently they are about 1/3 of the way through the collection that is currently at TCC. They are making notes on needed repairs that can be done in 2021 or 2022. Once all the items have been inventoried and repaired, they will work on relocating artwork in city facilities. o We Are Puget Sound (traveling art display) o Tracy Gallaway: representatives from the organization reached out to us last year. The focus is about the Importance of protecting Puget Sound. They would like us to host the exhibit at the Tukwila Community Center. We have scheduled to have the exhibit in late 2022 and early 2023. ■ ACTION ITEMS: 1. We would need help from Commissioners to install. 1. Tracy will follow up on specific dates for the show. 1. Thanipa "Honey" Suwanchote suggested using students so they could get their required volunteer hours. 1. Commissioners were receptive. ■ ACTION ITEM: 1. Need to decide on date for retreat. 1. New Business: o Foster High School Mural Project o Sheila Coppola, Thanipa "Honey" Suwanchote, and Sarah Kavage (Artist in Residence) formed a team and met with a Foster High teacher (Mr. Sarino). Mr. Sarino, his students and Honey will lead the project. Sarah is not able to be heavily involved but could consult. ■ The school also asked for additional help restoring an existing mural. o Sheila Coppola: reported the school wants to finish this academic year. A supply needs list has already started. ■ Tracy Gallaway: suggested any mural supplies from previous projects could be used. o Cynthia Chesak: suggested having another artist to assist would be essential for student learning, allowing them to see another perspective. ■ Tracy Gallaway: suggested using Urban Artworks to help facilitate as they have experience working with students. o ACTION ITEM: Tracy will follow up with Sarah about moving ahead on the project. o Juneteenth Celebration — Saturday, June 18, 2021 @ the Sullivan Center o Tracy Gallaway: explained the basics of the event to the commissioners. o Tukwila Lights Event Proposal o Tracy Gallaway: introduced this project idea to the commissioners. Our plan is to wait until next year. o Printmaking workshops and demonstrations Sheila Coppola: shared a potential project to the Commission from artist Jacoub Reyes whose work addresses social issues and incorporates community collaboration (potential partners include local student and members of the Duwamish tribe). Reyes aligned his proposal with the City's equity initiative. ■ The commissioners were receptive to the project so Sheila asked for $2000 in funding, which would strengthen a separate grant request from 4Culture. Pinky Estell moved to approve the budget request. Cynthia Chesak seconded it. All present voted to approve. 1. Commission/Staff Rep Report Outs: • Pinky Estell: Tukwila School District staff reached out to Pinky to let him know that the Performing Arts Center at Foster High School is going to be renovated with the project beginning in summer 2022. • Tracy Gallaway, Staff Liaison: o Utility Box Art Program: Pinky and Kai volunteered to serve as jurists. o Riverton Creek Art Project — Sarah Kavage would like to present at the April TAC meeting. Sarah would like to do some tours. o Southcenter District Art Project — Project will be finalized this summer. Tracy will ask about tickets for Commissioners. 1.
