Strategic Planning status • Michael May led the commissioners in a small exercise to prepare the commission for work on a Strategic Plan. The following questions were posed (reflecting on the past two years): ■ What are specific things we have accomplished? ■ Where are you proud? ■ Where are you disappointed? ■ What should we be doing next? ■ Cynthia Chesak commented that the pandemic really slowed down the work of the commission to a standstill. • She said this is a good time to reflect on what we may or may not want to do. For example, do we want to revive the annual Art Show in the Social Hall? o However, it is important to tap into the diversity of our community to get a good mix, she said. o Pinky Estell agreed and added that it is important to go seek out new artists from their specific communities. He suggested that if we were to do the Art Show perhaps, we Phone: 206-433-1800 • Email: Mayor@TukwilaWA.gov • Website: TukwilaWA.gov TAC Agenda Packet April 27, 2022 Page 4 can reduce the amount of work by just having the artists present their own works. He also mentioned that supporting local artists and giving them voice is central to the mission of the commission. o Sheila Coppola commented that the Art Show was a lot of work for such a short lifespan (2 -days); however, these events are helpful to artists. ■ Sheila Coppola mentioned that any public art projects should involve the commission. It was disappointing that two high profile city projects (the new Fire Station and Justice Center) failed to consult the commission for the art commissioned for each project. • Pinky Estell added that the commission needs to be involved early on. ■ Sheila Coppola mentioned that any new art acquired by the city should support a more diverse collection, especially the artists. • Pinky Estell added that we should be cataloging all the art in the city (both indoor and outdoor facilities). Kai Curry supported the idea of an art walk. • Pinky Estell added that we could reengage the Legacy Trail. It would be a good opportunity to tap into the city's diverse artist community. ■ Pinky Estell: he suggested that the commission take another look at the Artist in Residence Program. The program is a way to build connections and community within the local arts community. A more formalized selection process would be needed if this is pursued. a. Additional Commissioner comments • Sheila Coppola: announced the possibility of connecting visiting artist Jacoub Reyes and the Duwamish Tribe for the tribe's Annual Gala on October 10. Reyes would produce a woodblock print. He would do this in honor of the Duwamish. The tribe in turn could use funds from print sales to support their activities. Sheila Coppola will connect with Jolene Haas (director of the Longhouse). • Cynthia Chesak: the recent concert by the Rainier Symphony was amazing. A musicologist gave a background on a select piece: The Negro Symphony. The symphony is making more inroads into choosing more diverse performance selections, feedback the commission had provided them in the past. The commissioners agreed that since the symphony had acted on feedback, we should consider awarding them grant dollars. Cynthia will reach out to ask if they want to submit a funding request.
