HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-11-01 Proclamation - National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month Office of the Mayor City of Tukwila, Washington PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, for the past several years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week; and WHEREAS, the purpose of the proclamation is to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless including the shortage of affordable housing in Tukwila for very low-income residents; and to encourage support for homeless assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations; and WHEREAS, there are many organizations committed to sheltering and providing supportive services as well as meals and food supplies to people experiencing homelessness including, but not limited to: Stillwaters’ – Tukwila Weekend SnackPack Program, Church by the Side of the Road, Riverton Park United Methodist Church, Tukwila Pantry, Tukwila Children’s Foundation, HealthPoint, Global2Local, Choose 180, YMCA of Greater Seattle, SeaTac- Tukwila Rotary, and the Tukwila School District; and WHEREAS, the City recognizes that hunger and homelessness continue to be a serious problem for many individuals and families in Tukwila; and WHEREAS, the intent of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is consistent with the activities of these local organizations. NOW THEREFORE, I, Allan Ekberg, Mayor of the City of Tukwila, in conjunction with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week do hereby proclaim the month of November as: Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month in the City of Tukwila and encourage all community residents to join me in recognizing that many people do not have housing and need support from the community and private/public nonprofit service entities.
