SUBJECT: 2022 Police and Fire Department July 4th report
4th of July Report 2022
Monday, July 4, 2022, Tukwila Fire had 11 calls, and Tukwila Police had 28 Firework-related calls.
There were no major fire incidents in Tukwila this year, however Zone 3 had a handful of
structure fires including a fatality fire in Renton (Most likely non-fireworks related) on July 3rd. A
debris fire near a strip mall just before midnight on July 4 th was the largest concern, however
was handled by the first alarm assignment (Apparatus from Tukwila, Puget Sound Regional Fire
Authority, and King County Fire District #2).
Tukwila Fire staffed all four stations with the normal staffing of 13, and used additional staffing
in anticipation of an impactful Fourth of July. The new ordinance allowing consumer fireworks
started this year. There were four stands in the city, and no reportable incidents stemming from
the stands.
The weather was not an issue and was helpful with some rain on July 3 rd.
We up-staffed the department starting in the afternoon with the Duty Chief (Fire Chief Wittwer),
a Deputy Chief (Chief Golden), and an overtime Engine Company ((1) Captain & (2) Fire Fighters).
This had a cost of 13 hours of overtime.

SUBJECT: July 4th Summary of Activity (1800-0200)
Most of our cities’ 4th of July events resumed this year but you can’t tell by looking at the data. The
easy assumption for smaller call volumes is that the holiday fell on a Monday this year.
Phone Stats:
This chart displays the number of calls per queue for the past 5 years. Volumes overall decreased

Police and Fire Incident Totals:
With record breaking rain fall in May and June, we got a late, wet start to summer which most likely
contributed to the 72% decrease in brush fires. EMS calls were down 22%.

So far in 2022, the Seattle area has averaged over 4” of rain a month. May accumulated the second-
largest total ever observed. While this may put a hamper on our plans and our moods, it also
contributed to a safer holiday.
Staffing issues were also in play this year so we had to get creative and be ready to pivot at a
moment’s notice. Kudos to everyone for being patient, helping out, and working towards our overall
goal of public safety.
