general retail. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel were
hazardous materials leak control and containment. Other special haz mat actions were also
taken. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received.
Mr. William Smith had filled a 100 gal propane tank for his house. He placed the tank on
its side in his car. He parked his car in the parking lot of Home Depot as he is an
employee. He went to work.
When we arrived I found the Auto filling with propane gas as well as most of the interior
of the auto, carpets. clothing and seats frozen from the liquid propane released from the
over pressure valve.
We denied access to the area (E-51 crew) E-52 crew obtained entry to the auto, removed
the tank and bled it off to relieve the pressure. We removed the contents of the auto to let
them off gas and thaw out. We moved the auto by pushing to a safe area to let the inside
out gas as well.
Mr Smith was advised by myself that he will not carry the propane in his car. That he
needs to let his car out gas for two three hours. He stated to me that he would comply on
all counts.
After I determined that situation was safe, all units returned to drill.
