RP (Frank Robeac, 206/433-1557) stated that a cloud of smelly white smoke was coming
from the vent of Unit #10, and that this is a frequent problem from the occupant of this
unit, who stops using whatever chemical it is every time the RP calls 911.
I requested TPD units respond and secure scene prior to our arrival. L54 stood by at
13810 TIB until this was done. FF. Marty Roberts stayed with the apparatus (on TIB)
while FF R. Rees and I walked down to the location.
On arrival I observed a slight haze of smoke/steam venting from the rear of unit #10.
Interview with occupant revealed that he was boiling rocks in a solution of PineSol and
Rubbing Compound to dissolve the rocks and release the gems (emeralds and rubies)
inside. (Chemical Ore Processing?)
TPD Officer Hines, who had entered the unit looking for signs of illegal chemical
production/manufacture (none found), stated there were numerous empty bottles inside
(ammonia, chlorox bleach, etc). No fire personnel entered the unit. Occupant denied
using anything but pinesol and rubbing compound.
Occupant stated he has lived at this address 41 years, but has a Washington ID card with a
Spanaway address (noted elsewhere in report). DOB:8.20.59
I informed occupant that this was an improper activity for a residential area and that he
would have to stop immediately and move his operation/process to a more appropriate
location with proper control/handling features (e.g. a fume hood). He stated he would
stop immediately. ("You only have to tell me once!")
By this time the unit was pretty well ventilated, and no further action at the scene was
warranted.L amJ..fukwila PDits left the scene.
