Kronen, Marco FFI 1 At 1807 hours on Monday March 25, 2002 we were dispatched to a strong odor of gasoline on the river near 56th Ave. bridge. On arrival we found a light sheen of diesel type product flowing down river. After investigating upriver, we determined the source was a sewer drain behind the riverside Casino. (14040 Interurban Ave. S.) We observed a steady lazy flow of what smelled like a petroleum or solvent based product. We found a nearby sewer man -hole cover which also had the odor and sheen of product flowing through it toward the river. Additional unit were requested including HM 52 for its floating booms. After consulting with Haz Mat Team Leader we placed several large floating booms around the opening of the sewer drain. This was performed from the waters edge, and L54 officer Assumed Safety during this operation. After applying the booms they appear to be containing the product. The amount of product in the sewer appears to be a residual amount and the flow of new product has stopped as of approx. 1900 hrs. Tukwila PD requested Public Works to the scene at our request. E53 performed recon down river and reports the farthest they could observe or smell the odor was the 42nd Ave Bridge near the community center. Boeing Fire was also contacted and asked to check the river at Plant 2. They reported nothing found at the Thompson of Plant 2 sites. Due to the size of the sheen on the river, DOE and US Coast Guard were contacted. Stan Raugh from DOT was advised of the situation and he indicted he would be stopping by the site in the AM and will contact St51 for any questions. Lt Heidi Rumazza of the USCG advised they may decide to send a rep out in the AM, and if they had any questions they would contact st 51. Pat Broden from Pub Works reported he would look at the sewer maps to try and indicate the likely area where the product may have originated and would do a recon of his own. He also advised that a crew would re-evaluate the site in the morning. He will follow up with Chief Olivas to advise him of the fmdings. The booms were left in place to catch any remaining residual of the product. At the time of the close of the incident it appeared the flow of product had stopped and was being contained by the booms. Absorbent pads were placed within the boom area. Four units were assigned to this incident. Eight personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 1818 hours and cleared at 1941 hours. The incident occurred at 13340 56 Ave S, Tukwila in District 002. The local station is ST52. The general description of this property is lake, river, stream. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was investigation and containment of possible hazardous material. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received. Alarm number 0000901 has been assigned to this incident.
