medic unit was added for evaluation. Prior to the medics arrival a second student walked
into the school office showing the same symptoms as the first student. L54 and a second
ambulance was added and command established. Other students were slowly being brought
to the main office showing the same beginning symptoms as the first two patients. An
investigation started with the first patients arrival as to the cause of the reaction. All
students were questioned about what they had for lunch and were they were outside of the
school. The staff that provided the food was also interviewed. Upon investigation the
common factor was that all patients had spent time on the grassy area in front of the
school. One parent stated that their child had played in that area yesterday and had an
allergic reaction requiring a trip to the doctor for evaluation. School staff researched the

E52 was dispatched to a possible allergic reaction involving a 10 year old student. On
arrival one patient was found having an allergic reaction to an unknown substance. One

use of weed killers and other type of chemical use in that area. After investigation, it was
determined that a small amount of Roundup and or Crossbow had been used the past few
days for spot weed control. Fertilizer had also been used in this area for general weed
control within the past few weeks. It was inconclusive if any of these products was the
reason for the students allergic reactions. It is possible that the type of grass itself was the
cause of the reactions. In all, 34 students were taken to Valley Hospital for evaluation.
Two students were taken to the emergency room by ambulance. Two went by private auto,
and 30 went by school bus to the emergency room. No students were admitted into the
hospital with most of the students showing very minor symptoms.
