While enroute, B51 cancelled HazMat 52 until E51 arrived to evaluate sivation. Upon arrival, E51 met by RP (Mr. Tyler Perry) who stated he was walking across parking lot towards the Mall, when he saw three roll -away bins in the back parking lot of the Red Lion Hotel (NORTH side) - when he looked in one of the bins, it was about half -full with water and contained two containers, one of which was labeled a muriatic acid. RP has worked in a hardware store and is familiar with dangers associated with this type of acid and call 9-1-1 immediately. E51 isolated the area (placing traffic cones and the apparatus to this effect). Wearing SCBAs, I and FF Nichols approached from upwind (detectable breeze blowing from the SOUTH). FF Ben Hayman was packed up as the standby Firefighter. B51 was also in the area (but not "ON" this alarm). Page: 2 Printed: 01/23/2003 22:01:26 • Incident Report 2003-0000235-000 Tukwila Fire Department Narratives 0 b Investigation of the bins found one bin, approximately half -full of water, with THREE one gallon size, clear plastic (HDPE?) containers in it: - one container labeled "MURANTIC ACID" was on its side on the bottom of the bin - appeared to be intact and full (with a clear liquid). - one container with NO LABEL, also on its side, full with a clear liquid. - one container with NO LABEL, floating on the top of the water, containing a clear liquid, about HALF full. All containers appeared to be intact with no leaks. B51 drove around the structure looking for any construction workers on site who would know about these bins Finding none, Capt Ewing contacted the Double Tree Suites who sent a maintenance person to the Red Lion Site to take control of the containers. Under direction, FF Nichols (still in SCBA, on air) removed containers from bin using a pike pole to hook the container handles When containers confirmed intact, they were removed from the bin and placed on the ground. Maintenance worker took control of product and will dispose of it later today. Most probably these containers were left over from a recent auction at this location, and left behind after the auction was concluded. the scene. A/LfMark A.
