Narratives
Alarm number 0003155 has been assigned to this incident.
L54 dispatched in placed of E51 for a hazardous material investigation. L54 was
dispatched 5200 S. 158th st, (Crystal Springs Park). En route to the call we were redirected
to 13900 Interurban Ave, as this is where the RP had transported the materials to. B51
added himself to the call. The initial call was for smoldering trash bags. The RP was a
parks dept. employee. The employee (Doug Bertha) was the RP. Doug had placed the trash
bags that he found next to the trash can at 5200 S 158th St (Crystal Springs Park) in the
back of his pickup truck. He then drove to another park and finally to the parks building at
13900 Interurban Ave S. where he noticed the smoke coming from the trash bags. He
placed the bags in the dumpster and found an aluminum can in the bed of his truck that had
been melted by the contents of the bags as the bags were sitting on top of the 12 oz
aluminum can. He then called 911.
B51 arrived just ahead of L54. B51 and L54 investigated the scene. L54 Crew went on air
to do recon. It was determined the product in the trash bags was still off gassing. L54
backed out and conferred with B51. B51 upgraded the alarm and brought additional units
to the scene.
Hazmat 51 arrived with supporting units. L54 split up to be entry and back up team along
with crews members from E51 and E52. Entry team went in after donning level b suits.
Entry team found rements of a meth lab with active reaction ongoing. PH test confirmed
strong acid. Entry team continued recon to find the following items:
4 cans of thrust engine starting fluid
3 cans of heet engine treatment
6 cans of red devil lye
1 gallon of toluol, ACE Brand
1 pint of acetone, ACE Brand
6 packets of sudafed from Walgrens.
2 packs of Eveready lithium ion batteries AA size total of 8 batteries found
1 smoke detector with 9 volt battery still in place.
Entry team did clean up and acid mitigation using soda ash.
Entry was deconed by E51 crew after over packing the product. Decon runoff was tested
and determined to be neutral. HM51 transported the over pack dnun and hazmat bags to
station 51 holding facility for DOE to pick up.
All units units returned in service.
