Author Assignment 1
Narrative Text At 1041 hours on Thursday January 6, 2005 we were dispatched to a flammable gas or
liquid condition. Three units were assigned to this incident. Eight personnel responded.
We arrived on scene at 1051 hours and cleared at 1125 hours. The incident occurred at
10700 27 Ave S, TUKWILA in District 5360. The general description of this property is
post office or mailing firms. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding
personnel was investigation. Mutual aid was received on this incident.
An odor of natural gas was noticed by employees of the Postal facility. This odor
originated outside and appeared to be drawn into the building. The building itself was one
which used natural gas for their boilers.
Upon arrival, E53 personnel were shuttled to and fro throughout the building (no one knew
what was going on). We finally arrived at the proper location.
Upon investigation, we found what appears to be an underground natural gas leak between
the natural gas meter and the building itself. The metering system is actually located 100
feet northeast of the building in question.
A very slight reading could be found using our micromax at two valve boxes (which
extended underground to a depth of 3-5 feet) and in the cracks of a sidewalk just outside of
the building.
The employees that worked in the boiler room had shut off their valves and isolated the
building. No reading could be detected inside the building. The meter outside was never
shut off. The odor had dissipated (for the most part) though a slight reading could still be
detected on our micromax at a sidewalk just outside the building.
PSE was notified and en route. E53 officer consulted with B51 and both agreed that the
situation appeared stable. E53 officer then spoke with Postal employees and they stated
that they were comfortable with the situation as it currently was. E53 then returned after
stating to the supervisor of the facility to call us again if the situation changed before PSE
arrived.
