Two units were assigned to this incident. Seven personnel responded. We arrived on scene at 0909 hours and cleared at 0930 hours. The incident occurred at 16828 53 Ave S, Tukwila in District 006. The local station is 51. The general description of this property is residential street, road or residential driveway. The primary task(s) performed at the scene by responding personnel was investigation. Other special haz mat actions were also taken. No mutual/automatic aid was given or received. Alarm number 0701566 has been assigned to this incident. E51 arrived to find a contractor that was digging fence post holes along a property line. He stated that he hit a gas line about one foot down and immediately buried it with dirt. He said it was "hissing" after he hit it, but once he burried it, it stopped. He stated he could still smell it directly in the area. My crew used a Micromax 4 gas detector to determine a safe zone. The detector was only getting a hit when put directly near the hole and its reading was an LEL of 4. The contractor and his employee were told to stay about 100 feet away and it was confirmed that the house downwind was evacuated. Puget Sound Energy had a ten minute ETA, so we left the line burried and waited for thier arrival. Once they arrived, they dug up the line and crimped it off. At this point we turned the scene over to them and returned in service.
